CRYSTAL COAST TEA PARTY PATRIOTS
MINUTES OF
28 FEBRUARY 2012

Meeting held at Golden Corral, Morehead City, NC
Meeting called to order at 6:05pm by Chairman BOB CAVANAUGH
Pledge of Allegiance led by SCOTT CARPENTER
Invocation by NANCY BOCK

BOB said he had seen TIM BUCK’s letter to the editor in the paper recently about our local candidates (Randy Ramsey, etc.) and he thought it was a pretty good letter.  Several letters by our TEA Party members, HARRY THOMPSON; JERE GEURIN (on defense of marriage act); and ROMA WADE  (EULA PARKIN said he deserved a metal for the letter he wrote about the undocumented people who come here to our country infected with so many diseases that we had thought were no longer in existence) have recently made the paper and nice comments were made on each.  KEN LANG said he had talked to several people who were active in consulting with politicians, and they said the one thing you can do that really does make a difference is writing letters to the editor.  So continue writing letter folks.  We have a friendly newspaper here.  JERE said we have three friendly newspapers in this area; so, send your letters to all three…. Jacksonville, New Bern, and Carteret County.

BOB said he had a letter from ERIC BROYLES that says, Glenda Self (?) who is a board member of the Cape Lookout Marine Science School Board has asked to speak at our March 6 meeting.  He told ERIC that he might want to change that to the next Tuesday.  He said that at that time she will present the facts as to what is occurring at Cape Lookout School and why their charter school license was initially renewed in December and then revoked a month later.  He wanted to know if the members are interested in listening to her.  Consensus was yes.  BOB told ERIC to set it up.

BOB said in our prayers we should include those poor kids and families in Ohio involved in  another school shooting.  He said he had finally come to the opinion that these young folks just don’t have any coping skills anymore.   They have been told that everybody is a winner and nobody is a loser…he doesn’t know if they can deal with any adverse things that come into their lives.  He said he understood a third high school student died today from his wounds.  That is three out of the five that were shot.  Discussion on where and how the gun was gotten.  HOWARD said he heard today that the shooter’s father was going to be charged.  If that is correct, then apparently it was his father’s gun.

NANCY BOCK wanted to know if anyone was keeping up with the Anti-Sheria conference in Tennessee…how the Muslims are infiltrating our education system.  Wanted to know if anyone had watched that video.  She said she could not get into that website that KEN LANG had put out.  KEN said he would go back and check it out since several said they could not get in also.

BOB said he guess we had all heard about this Iranian Christian who would not renounce his Christian Faith and has been condemned to death.  Any time there is any type of anti-Muslim thing Muslims go into a freaking uproar, but anytime there is an anti-Christian thing, where are all the Christians in this country.  Why aren’t the churches organizing and having marches down the dang street.  The Christian church in this country either doesn’t give a d–m or something.  They are not organized and he doesn’t hear them protesting.  BELVA MANNING said and that is one of the reasons for the problems we are having today.  BOB feels that the minute they mentioned about hanging that priest, the first thing he thought about was all the churches in Carteret County should get together and set a certain Sunday and all the churche members meet down there at the Port and march all the way through town.  And let that catch on all over the whole country.  The Christians need to stand up for what they believe in.  But you don’t hear a dang peep out of nobody.  Franklin Graham is on a couple of shows talking about it, and all the schools that they have rebuilt in various places around the world, but if the Christian Churches do not stand up and provide some kind of venue for their members, to come forward and express themselves under the umbrella of the church ain’t nothing going to change for the good.  It is just going to get worse.  If the churches were organized, there is no way in h–l, that Obama and the Democrats and/or liberals, whoever they are, could get away with binging on the church like they are.  There should be such a political uproar with demonstrations going on in opposition to the way our government officials are trying to run down Christianity, at the same time they seem to be promoting or at least turning a blind eye to what the Muslims are doing with the Sheria law, honor killings, the murdering of Christians over in the Arab Spring.  Something has to change.  You members who know your pastors, your church members, somebody has to grab the bull by the horns and start organizing.

He called on JERE GEURIN.  JERE said year before last when the Manhatten Declaration was published (they held a seminar here in Morehead City which he attended, so he asked the pastor in the Presbyterian Church to come over to his church and talk to the men’s group about this declaration and his pastor forbid it and would not allow it.  That is reason number 2 of why he left that church.  The pastor said it was ecumenical and he was against all the churches getting together.  Frankly he thought he was off base.

BOB introduced Ken Jones, Mayor of Pine Knoll Shores (who had just arrived to the meeting).  He informed the attendees that Jones was running for the Senate seat being vacated by Jean Preston when she retires.  Asked Ken to tell us all about himself.

Mr. Jones thanked us for giving him the opportunity to speak.  He said he was a second term mayor of Pine Knoll Shores and he is running for the Second District Senate seat.  There are several reasons he is running, many of those affect each and every person in this room as well as this district.  He is sick and tired, as he is sure you all are, of the tax, and tax, and more tax system that we seem to have here in NC.  This is not a business friendly state.  Talk about 80% of your jobs being in small business, yet it is not a friendly state to start a business in.  He was telling a group this morning that he met with out at the port, that he had a corporation in Georgia and it cost $50.00 every year to register there and it costs $250.00 every year in the state of NC.  Why is that?  Government is too big.  It is too impersonal and it has become too far from the people.  We need to streamline things, we need to do things smarter, no doubt about it.  Ask anybody that works with anybody or any organization with the state and it seems it takes forever to get anything through and we have to wait until somebody comes back after they have been away for a week or whatever.  It has just gone on long enough.  How can you be in a state where your schools are number 48 out of 50 and think that just throwing money at it is going to fix it.  It is broken..it needs to be fixed.  Just throwing money at it is not going to do the trick.  He was asked by the precinct chair over in Havelock where he stood on ID when you go to vote.  He said he showed his ID when he went to vote whether he had to or not because he thinks that is the right thing to do.  The system we have breeds corruption and there is corruption, no question about it, so we need to get rid of that stuff.  We need to get things straightened out and we need to become more business friendly.  As mayor of Pine Knoll Shores, we have a really great team over there, and we work well together.  We do a lot for the town.  He is always of the opinion that the best government is the government that is closest to the people.  That makes sense doesn’t it, because you can reach out and touch somebody, push a button.  He is currently the senate appointee to the Eastern Region Economic Development Commission, so he has a good grasp of what goes on here.  Within that region there are 13 counties including Carteret, Craven and Pamlico.  We bring jobs to the area.  I can’t tell you how many jobs we have brought but it includes the 350 jobs we brought to Kinston a couple of months ago.  So that is what it is all about is doing those things that make business more capable and able to do things here.  People should be able to work for their money and be able to keep more of it.  He is a small business owner.  He has to meet a payroll.  He has to sign for budgets in a town.  He is the military candidate for this office.  He had a career in the US Air Force, 12 years.  It is tough to find Air Force guys in this area and he really has to watch his back in Havelock.  (Laughter)  None of the other candidates have military experience.  There are 3 things he brings to the table, he is conservative, a leader, educated (has a masters degree) and is experienced  That is the big thing, he is experienced, more experienced than the other two candidates.  He is also on the governors Land Compatibility Task Force.  That sounds strange, doesn’t it?  That is a group of 11, that are working to keep the air space and the encroachment affecting the military bases of the state of NC, so he is working on all 4 bases.  He is going to have to spend all day tomorrow in Raleigh and you know that is not fun.  So anyway, he is experienced in all those things with the bases, with the region, with the district, and with the towns and the people here, so he feels he brings a lot to the table.  He also tends to think that Carteret County is a little more difficult than the other two in understanding the problems here because we have beach re-nourishment here….we have a port here, we have a lot of things that go on here that don’t go on in the other two counties.  Now mind you they have situations as well, and he understands those and he spends time over there, but he also thinks it is important that we try to keep this seat in this county and keeping the seat in the Republican party is a major thing as well.  And so far, no Democrats have registered or filed.  He said he would answer any questions anyone had.  FRED said you know that voter ID bill was passed, vetoed and overridden when a judge said it was unconstitutional.  Jones said then how come it is legal in other states and not legal here.  Maybe we need to change judges.  Discussion on who the judge was.  Hudson or Stevens?  DIANE LANG said when they announce on TV that seniors can no longer afford to retire in NC; how do you feel about that?  Jones said not only seniors can’t afford to retire in NC but nobody can afford to live here, period, because of the tax situation.  Look at the gas tax, one of the highest in the country.  This is a small point, but why is a lottery now costing twice as much?  That money was supposed to go to the schools.  Is it?  Remember they were going to cut down on the taxes so that…no that hasn’t happened either.  Every time you turn around there is another tax.  They are adding to the cost of people that take the ferries around here as well.  Mis-management.  Anybody know her?   She is currently in Raleigh.  So, anyway there are a lot of things we need to do to make it more livable.  So people can come here and work and come here and live and our children can get educated properly.  We can do a better job, I am sure.  He is of the opinion this needs to be run more like a business and be accountable for it.  He heard today how many people in the state of NC get a $400,000.00 a year pay check.  They work for the state.  Those people can afford to retire here, right?   HOWARD said the reason our gas tax is so high and our roads are so poor, is because there is no management in DOT.  Jones said if he was looking for an argument, he was not going to get one from him.  He is from a town that was supposed to get a bridge that was supposed to start in January that is now starting March 7 because of DOT dragging it on…and sidewalk projects… KEN said and now they are going to put a median strip down Highway 70.  ERIC asked Jones his thoughts on the median.  Jones said they have done that in Havelock.  It is interesting…let me get this straight….you don’t have them in because it is safer not to…then you put them in because it is safer to have them…then you take them out because it is safer to not have them….now we are putting them back because it is safer.  The story here is the state government has so much money that we can afford to pour concrete down the middle of the road.  He thinks it is a mistake and it is ruining businesses for sure.  He thinks it is interesting that to go to the gas station he has to drive farther and turn around to get back to the gas station so that they can get more gas tax to pour more concrete.  ERIC wanted to know what Jones’ position was on illegal immigration in this state because there are 400 to 600 thousand illegal immigrants (it is estimated that 2/3 of them work, which means those are jobs that have been taken away from US citizens residing in NC.  Everybody avoids the issue because they are afraid of losing the Mexican vote.  Jones said here was a thought for you, Obama’s people have set up offices in New Bern and they are out getting people to register to vote NOW  as we speak.  There are a few things I expect from the federal government.  I expect them to have a good military, (peace through strength), have a currency and keep the border secure, because that is part of having a good military is security.  The federal government needs to grow a back bone and do that.  ERIC said can you within the first couple of days in office submit a bill that lays a $10,000.00 fine (per incident) on hiring illegal immigrants.  Jones said he would like to see that, because we are talking about the future of our country -all together.  Open borders does not cut it.  People being here illegally does not cut it.  We need to fix it.  He likes the laws in places like Arizona.  ERIC said right now we are spending $2 billion dollars on the illegal immigrant issue.  Jones said he wanted to take one step forward and something else out of your wallet is having to put everything in bilingual.  Why don’t we declare a national language and get this over with, right?  A gentleman in the audience (didn’t catch his voice but think it was WYATT RIKE IV) said the education system was faltering a little lately, what did he think about a voucher system.  Jones said he thinks that all that has to be looked at and be integrated in the system, because there are positives and negatives to anything like that…but we have to get the best bang for our buck…that is the bottom line.  If our schools are so bad that people want to put them somewhere else again maybe we need to look at the bottom line and come up with something smarter and better, because , maybe people won’t want to go to the voucher system if we do that.  But we do need to make our schools better across the board and hold people accountable for that as well.  HOWARD said someone told him that the state constitution says our ballots will only be printed in English; so he got a copy of our state constitution and read it.  The state of NC, by printing ballots in other than English, is violating the state constitution.  Jones said it doesn’t surprise him.  Not to mention that we are having to pay to have it printed in two languages and also paying an interpreter out there to help somebody read it.  Again, Federal government, declare a national language and move on.  FRED DECKER said the state of Tennessee was facing the same problem by laying off all these teachers so the governor opened up, took the cap off charter schools, and made them unlimited.  Nobody got laid off, and the education system improved.  Jones said there are a lot of smart things we can do, there is no question about it.  HARRY THOMPSON asked Jones what business was he in.  He said he was a financial planner.  He has an office in Havelock and visits an office in Jacksonville.  He has been doing it for 15 years, prior to that he was in the Air Force.  ERIC said Jones said he was part of the Eastern Regional Economical Development Commission.  Did you know anything about this port situation with Potash and when did you know.  Jones said that was not run through the EREDC.  He said they had talked about that this morning.  He does know how it all came out.  There again, back to what he said, the best government is the one that is closest to the people.  The board of commissioners that he is on, passed a resolution against that thing almost as fast as it came out.  Imagine what that would have done to the Morehead City waterfront.  And some of the things that happened, well all of them, need to be watched more closely.  The other thing about that port is they did business there for years and didn’t charge for the time that was used on certain ships, and that needs to be run more like a business as well.  Just because it’s a state port, it doesn’t matter, it still needs to be run properly.  ERIC asked how he felt about container shipping coming into this port.  There is a lot of talk about that becoming a big economic boost to our community.  Jones said of the two seaports in the state, Wilmington and Morehead City, he always asks ’which of the two seaports are deeper?’  Do you know which is deeper?  Answer, yes, Morehead City, by a long shot.  Wilmington can not get any deeper, because it is rock.  BOB said 6 hours from the ocean also.  Jones said yes, and this is a great place to bring ships into port.  The problem he sees with the potential cargo that could come in and out of that port is a lot of it is dangerous.  You look at that bridge going between Morehead and Beaufort, any of those islands, it is only two lane.  Is that a problem?  There shouldn’t be a lot of things coming in there that could be dangerous, because of the location; and the fact that the highway system is not developed around there to properly handle it.  It is possible sometime in the future another road could come on board and go out to 101, Havelock bypass, something like that, but coming through Morehead City with some dangerous cargo is probably a mistake.  SCOTT CARPENTER asked what kind of cargo would he suggest.  Jones said a lot of agriculture products can go through this port.  Right now, there is a lot of questions about the wood pellets that go through there.  The wind and water situation, but really we could move a lot of agriculture products out of there.  One of the advantages is that it is not very far away from Jones County, Lenoir County, etc. That has a lot of potential to it, but it doesn’t happen.  SCOTT asked what about the economical impact possibly off our coast – do you encourage anything off our coast?  Jones asked, ‘are you referring to wind energy, fishing, oil drilling, or what?’  One of the reasons gas and oil prices are so high, and one is not correlating with the other right now for some reason, but we do need to do more drilling, the pipeline and all that stuff we have heard about on the news   The guy who says he is worried about gas prices is the same guy who stopped all that stuff.  Isn’t that interesting?  And he is running for re-election too, you may have heard.  So he (Jones) is in favor of doing some off shore research and seeing about oil, whether it is available or not.  Fishing, we have done a turnaround and done some wrong things there.   Wind energy definitely needs some more study.  That is one of the areas that he is working on right now when it comes to air space for the military bases here.  Primarily, if the military can’t train here, they are not going to stay here.  We had a discussion with them about windmills, whether they are in the water or on land, and the question was are they going to be a problem for the aircraft and they said yes.  Someone said well they have those in other countries, aren’t they a problem there?  And they said no, we blow them up when we are passing through.  He thinks we need to do a study and then move on.  We really need to do something but we need to take care of our environment at the same time.  So we need to do it properly.  This yes and no, and picking and choosing, again, is mis-management, he thinks.  BOB said he had talked about marine fisheries.  Are US coastal waters and fish populations under the umbrella of the United Nations for species management.  Jones said he was not sure of that.  BOB said one of the things that we are kind of concerned about in the TEA Party is UN Agenda 21, which is just now starting to hit the airways of public consciousness but is still not widely known.  He saw this whole move by NC with the 100 year sea level rise thing as part of that.  That the whole plan is to take real estate out of future production and reserve it for environmentalists for initiatives.  Jones said that whole sea level thing has mostly been shelved.  BOB said they are still pushing it.  It is not dead.  Jones agreed.  He said the people that are fishing are regulated by the people where they get their fishing license.  KEN LANG said he just wanted to clarify that on the sea level rise, the governor’s panel on sea level rise report was shelved.  However, the DENAR is still using sea level rise in their planning at this particular moment, so it has kind of been shoved under the table, but is still an issue.  They had some people on Lockwood’s show last week that were talking about that.  Jones said he was of the opinion that the future is going to be tough.  The next 2 to 4 years are going to be very tough.  People are going to have to make some tough decisions and if they do not have a back bone we are going to be in even bigger trouble.  He is sure he is the guy to make the decisions and represent the people of this district. He thinks we need someone in office that has the ability and the personality to put their fists down and say no or even put their fists down and say yes.  He wants to make sure that happens to represent our people fairly.  And that is one of the primary reasons he is running.  ERIC asked if we could go back and touch on this world situation again.   NC, from what he has heard, has some major oil deposits in the ground. He feels it is time that we started getting a check back from the state like they do in Alaska, instead of taxing us to death.  Jones said he did not want them to give back, he just wants them to go away.  We need to be more efficient, manage properly, but we don’t need a huge bureaucracy to manage all this stuff either.  ERIC said he was not asking for a check , but by drilling and providing oil, we could at least get rid of the gas tax.  HOWARD said, you spoke of agriculture products exported through the port; years ago they had a grain buying station at the port and actually had state inspectors.  Why it went away, he has no idea.  Jones said he had heard a couple of things during the discussion this morning.  They have not been good neighbors.  He does not know why.  He does not know who is at fault here.  It does not matter, but let’s fix it.  Let’s all get together and talk and get it straightened out.  HOWARD asked who is they, the port?  Jones said yes the port, the state port people especially. Jones said one other thing he wanted to talk about…did everyone know about the aircraft fuselages that go through this port.  HOWARD said yes, from GTP coming this way.  Jones said, ‘right, from Spirit Aviation‘.  They are being built in Kinston and go to France where they are included on an air bus there.  They also build the wings, but they go out through Wilmington.  The question is why?  That is being looked at.  Those fuselage parts come down here to the port and go out and that has just started in the last few months.  They also have the capability to fly them out of the Trans Park if they need them fast.  It is a pretty good operation and is supposed to expand.  That is more a regional thing and not just right here in Carteret County, but it is still important that we have that going through the port here.  HARRY THOMPSON asked how he felt about Congressmen, after only serving one term, can receive full retirement benefits.  Jones said he felt they should be in the same circumstances as you and I are in.  He hates the idea that he is working 360 days a year so they can work 5 or 6 months a year.  HARRY said he was upset that they were able to serve only one term and get life time benefits.  Jones said yes that is ridiculous.   They should be on the same social security program that we are on, which needs to be fixed too.   He said earlier that the best government is the government that is closest to the people.  When he first got elected mayor, one of his neighbors stopped him and said ’Ken, now that you are the mayor, what do we call you’?  He told her that now that he worked for her, he guessed she could call him anything she wants to.  That is his true perspective.  That is the way it should be.  They should represent people and meet with people in order to represent people.  He is not doing this job for the pay.  Linda LaGoy asked Jones ’you are part of the Economic Development Commission for the Eastern Region, so during that Potash debacle, in the paper it said for the federal grant there was a clause in there that said people were not allowed to know that the contract was signed until after it was signed.  Jones said he had not heard that.  That did not come through the EREDC.  She said she felt that he would see a lot of those contracts.  He said he did, but had never seen anything that said that.  Speaking from the commission he is on, the things that are confidential, even if they make a decision in closed session, which is probably where this was made, the voting has to be made in open session.  That is state law.  So the voting has to be made publicly.  He is sure that is the same law they are under.  They may have done that.   They may have had a closed session, made the decision, voted to come out of closed session, go into open session, did the voting and it was all open to the public.  But you know what, no body showed up.  No public was there to hear.  That is possible.  He is not saying it actually happened that way.  ERIC asked if Jones was elected, there were two things he was curious about (1) the veto power of the governor (ERIC does not feel our governor should have veto power, that once the bodies make the decision they are speaking the will of the people) and (2) Term limits.  Jones said he did not like the idea of a career politician because you lose sight of reality.  The people in Washington, do you think they know what reality is?  They do not have a clue.  As to the veto power of the governor, you are talking about a constitutional amendment and it would take a lot to change that.  Keep this in mind.  You may like that veto power at times and not like it at others.  You have to look at both sides.  You can’t pick and choose.  The neat thing is the Legislature can override the veto and that has happened a lot this past year.  KEN said you either have the checks and balances of a veto power versus the Legislature or you don’t.  Jones said he thought ERIC wanted this governor to not have veto power.  He hopes everyone will be out on May 8th to vote in the primary.  JERE GEURIN asked what his thoughts were on the Marriage Protection Amendment.  Jones said ’Marriage is one man and one woman’…end of story.  He does not like the government involved in his religion.  The one man/one woman is the way it is done and that is the way we need to keep it.  Jones thanked us for our time and he appreciated us for getting involved because that is what it really is all about…the people in the grass roots being out there standing up for their rights; because that is what keeps your rights.  So thank you very much for you time, I appreciate it.  (Applause)

BOB then called on Kirby Smith, who is running for District Court Judge.  There are 6 seats up for re-election, but only two are being contested.  (Jerry Waddell, who retired and there are 3 people including Smith who are running for that seat and Sherrill Spencer also has competition running against her).

Smith told us he was from New Bern; his mother’s family has been in New Bern for generations. His father’s family split.  His grandfather was from a little town called Aden, and his grandmother was a Baldree, and her family is from here in Morehead.  She was born on Arendell Street, so he claims ties here.  He grew up here, but like most kids, all he wanted to do was leave, and he did.  He went off to college.  His plan was to go to Wall Street and make a fortune.  He made it to Richmond, Virginia in time to watch the market crash in October of ’87.  Remember those days, the market was pushing 3,000.  He was there when the market dropped 562 points in a single day.  Lost 1/6 of its value.  The phones in the office were silent that day.  He was not a stock broker although he did earn his series 7 license.  He was in operations, the guy that when you bought stock, he took your money and put the stock you bought into your account.  After October 29, 1987, he decided it was time for a radical life change.  He said his dad had always said to put yourself into the position where you can work for yourself, so he went to law school and thoroughly upset his dad.  He went to Wake Forest and his plan was really to go back into business.  He really did like business…he had  a business degree from the University of NC at Chapel Hill.  But he fell into the trial practice and he absolutely loved it.  He took trial practice, pre-trial practice and ended up going to NC Supreme Court working there for a summer and loved that.  Worked on death penalty cases.  Anyone interested in how that works, see him after the meeting.  While he was at the Supreme Court, he got to know the heads of the Administrative Office, and a friend of his asked if he had ever considered becoming a prosecutor.  Truth was he had not.  He told him he should and asked him to stay in touch with him.  Kirby asked him why was that?  He said he dealt with payroll and he could tell him where the vacancies are.  Kirby said he would definitely keep his numbers.  During his third year of law school, he would call him up and he would say ‘here is where the vacancies are’.  And he was lucky enough to get a job as a prosecutor in Rocky Mount, NC.  He was there for three years and thoroughly enjoyed it.  It was quite an experience.  He tried everything…from second degree trespassing up to capital murder.  He was not the lead prosecutor in the capital murder case, don’t get him wrong, but he was involved and he did prosecute murder cases.  He was there three years and would probably be there today, but his mom called and asked him could he raise a family on what he was making as a prosecutor and he said ‘no maam, I can’t’.  She told him he needed to think about what he was doing.  She was right.  He was approaching 30 years old.  His grandmother, who is now 90 years old, was in her 80’s then, and his mom, was a single woman on her own….he wanted to get back home and be with his family.  He moved back to New Bern and has been here ever since.  Since then he has defended criminal cases and has defended everything from trespassing on up to murder…never a capital murder case though.  He has been in juvenal court, domestic court, what they call 4D or child support court.  He has done virtually everything you could image in the court system.  He has been to the NC Supreme Court four times…3 and 1. He lost his last case there just last year.  He has been to the NC Court of Appeals numerous times and he thinks he has 20 years of experience and the best resume for your next District Court Judge.  Why is that important?  In district court, unlike any other court, there is no jury.  You go there and there is a judge.  The judge sits as judge and jury.  And so, it is really important that your judge knows what he is doing.  Think about what kind of cases district court hears.  They hear juvenal cases, (if you are under the age of 16 and charged with a felony, you don’t get a jury trial.  You have to go in front of a juvenal court judge and you can go to prison – we call it a youth development center – but you can go to prison until you are 21 without having a jury hear your case.)  Domestic cases are heard in district court.  Anybody who gets divorced in this state or any grandparents who want to try and get visitation rights with their grandchildren must go to domestic court and that case will be heard by a judge…no jury.  If you are being evicted from your apartment or if you are a landlord trying to evict a tenant from your apartment, your case will be heard in small claims court, no jury.  But if your tenant or landlord appeals, it is going to district court.  There are juries in some cases in district court where they hear tort claims.  He has never heard exactly what tort claims are, he thinks it has something to do with personal injury, within or less than $10,000.00.  Isn’t that something where we define minor claims as less than $10,000.00?  Small claims is $5,000.00 but if it is appealed from small claims it goes to district court and you can have a jury trial there.  Jury trials in district court are very, very rare.  BOB said he understood that you could request a jury trial and Smith said he was exactly right.  If you are charged with a crime, the Constitution guarantees you the right to a jury trial .  The way the NC Constitution worked to get around that was to say OK you go to district court you can have your trial in front of a district court judge and if you get convicted then you can appeal it to superior court and have a jury trial up there.  There are very few superior court judges who are happy having to try a speeding ticket case, especially in front of a jury.  In 20 years, he thinks he has seen that two times.  You’re the TEA Party, why do you folks care about everything I am saying or not.  Let’s talk about the effects the court system has on our taxes.  I may be wrong about this, but I think the NC courts may turn a profit and may actually generate revenue for the state.  They have raised the court costs now.  When he started it was, he wanted to say $85.00 just to pay off a speeding ticket.  It is now $263.00.  That is within 17 years.  If the system is paying for itself should we really complain.  Within what we call the 3B Judicial District, which is Carteret, Craven and Pamlico Counties, (this is a loose figure and I don’t want you to hold me to it, but ball park) he thinks last year they spent a million dollars on court appointed attorneys for people charged with crimes.  The US supreme court has said you can not put anybody in jail unless they have an attorney.  They can represent themselves, but they have to have that right; so the judge sits there and says I want to put you in jail….and you say, I want an attorney…the judge has to give you one or give you an opportunity to hire one if you can afford your own.  That is where the costs come in in the court system.  A lot of the costs in the court system are fixed.  If you look at the court system they have some really old stuff.  They have terminals, instead of PC’s still.  The state tries various things to try to bring those costs down.  Here in Carteret County you have public defenders instead of court appointed attorneys.  In Craven and Pamlico Counties they have court appointed attorneys…attorneys who are just assigned to hear cases.  But a district court judge, that is the one who first appoints an attorney.  And the judges have complete discretion.  Some give court appointed attorneys generously, others very strickly.  He will not tell us one way is right and one way is wrong.  What he will tell us is you need a judge who knows when you need to appoint an attorney because you don’t want to put that person in jail vs. a judge who is going to give a court appointed attorney to someone who is not going to jail.  Does that make any sense?  He takes court appointed cases and he can tell you it makes him mad when he sees someone appoint an attorney for someone he knows is not going to jail.  It should make him glad, because he is going to make a little bit of money off that case.  Those are his tax dollars, not just yours paying those fees, but his too, you know we have people who are not going to jail and they are getting court appointed attorneys.  We need judges who are going to really scrutinize the charge and criminal record before they decide yes and appoint an attorney.  And then, and I need to be careful how I state this, your judges are going to scrutinize the bills.  He saw an attorney yesterday who did a beautiful job.  You know how much time she asked for that case?  One hour.  When asked how much time she had in the case, she said one hour.  That is extremely low.  Another attorney can come in there and the judge ask how much time you got in a case and he may say he has 10 hours.  Actually he has seen as much as 20 or 30 hours on misdemeanor cases.  We need a judge who is going to stand up and when that attorney says one hour, the judge says thank you, thank you very much and when the attorney stands up and says he has 10 hours, the judge will tell him come on up here we need to talk.  He doesn’t believe in chastising someone in public but you do need to look at someone and say this is too much, you need to lower your bill.  He was a chairman of RCS in New Bern for a couple of years (RCS is Religious Community Services).  They run the homeless shelter and the soup kitchen.  It is supported by the local churches.  He won’t say they don’t get a penny of federal money…. they may have gotten some grants, but he doesn’t know when and they didn’t get a lot.  At the same time he was on the DSS board.  He was at a DSS meeting and the director said that we were going to give away the quarterly food distribution.  That is where they give away all the government’s surplus food.  Craven County was renting the Jaycee Fairgrounds and giving out food to anybody who received food stamps.  He said that does not make a lot of sense because the fairgrounds are out on highway 70, a good couple of miles outside of town.  How are the people going to get there to get the food?  Answer was, well, we don’t get a lot of people and a lot of the people who do come take cabs.  He said ‘they take cabs?’ ‘How much does that cost?  He was told they were limited to $20.00 worth of food and the cab ride was close to $20.00.  Therefore, they weren’t giving all the food away, so you know what they did with the food?  This is your government in action.  They called the food bank in Greenville, and told them to come get the extra food.  The food bank sent a truck down to the fairgrounds and picked up the food and took it back to Greenville.  The food bank sells the food (18 cents a pound) but they cannot sell government surplus food (government says you can get it for free but you can’t sell it)…so the food bank did not want to deal with that so they called RCS and told them to come get the food.  So RCS had to send a truck from New Bern to Greenville and bring it back.  He said this does not make any sense.  The reason he is telling us this story is he wants us to know something about him personally, what you hopefully can expect from  him.   He was able to negotiate (took the lead role in negotiations) an agreement between RCS and DSS, so RCS now does the quarterly food distribution.  All the government surplus food is given to RCS every quarter and the plan was they would give out the food and whatever food was not given away they would just put into their pantries and soup kitchen.  RCS is in a very poor downtrodden part of town.  When they give the food out, people line up a couple of hours before hand.  We have to call the police out now to basically keep people from being in the street.  The food is all given away within an hour.  Whether or not you think it is right for the government to be giving away surplus food, he is not prepared to debate that, but he will tell us this…they gave the food out more efficiently, quicker and we did it for free.  The citizens of Craven County are no longer renting the fairgrounds.  No one is driving the trucks back and forth between Greenville and New Bern and it is all being done for free.  So where it used to cost the tax payers (he was not sure of the amount) it is now costing the tax payers absolutely nothing… and he does take pride in that.  That is one thing he is most proud of.  He told us this so we could see what he stands for…the way he thinks and the way he does things.  He then asked for questions.  BOB said ‘you will be hearing drunk driving cases and he knows that cases are individual, but could he give him an overview on his policy regarding first offense drunk drivers…second and third offenses.  Smith said he could not say what he would do with a given set of circumstances because that would be considered pre-judging and then he wouldn’t be able to hear any drunk driving cases.  What you are asking is pretty much laid out by the letter of the law.  He attended a seminar on driving while impaired courses and really the Legislature has taken with the law again this year.   Let me just give you this scenario, take two men, both 58 years old.  One has just served 7 years in prison for armed robbery.  He gets out, goes to a bar, gets drunk, borrows a car, starts speeding down the road, goes through a work zone driving erratically, crashes, and the police get to the scene.  He is belligerent, refused to answer questions.  He doesn’t fight with the police but will not answer their questions, will not give them a breath test, will not give a blood test.  They have to forcibly take blood from him.  He registers a .24 and they look at his record and he has been in prison for the last 7 years but before that he had 3 DWI’s in the past 10 to 12 years.  Compare that to the second 58 year old man, who has never had a traffic ticket in his life.  He is a pillar in his community, deacon in the church, works on various boards and is an all around great guy.  Never been in trouble with the law in his life.  He decides he wants to take his 17 year old son to a baseball game.  While there he gets two big glasses of beer and drinks them.  Games over, he takes his 17 year old son, that he took to the game, they go get in the car and he puts the key in ignition..starts up the ignition and before he can do anything, someone backs into him.  Being the good guy he is, he picks up the phone, calls the police, tells them he has been in an accident.  The police get out there and they ask if he has been drinking.  He says yes, answers all their questions, does everything they ask and blows a .08.  One of these two men must go to jail.  Would you care to guess which one?  No, violator number one does not have to go to jail, but the second man must go to jail for at least 30 days…because he had a person under the age of 18 in his car.  The judge has absolutely no discretion.  That does not mean that number one can not go to jail, but number 2 must go for 30 days.  That is the way the statute is written.  You talk about 1st, 2nd, and 3rd offenders, the law is very structured in what you must do.  If it is your first DWI, you don’t have a high blow;  you are cooperative with the police; you come in and plead guilty;  you get your DWI assessment; plea to treatment; bring your money to court; and you get a little fine, 24 hours in jail and 24 community service.  It is just that simple.  BOB said what he was opposed to was a young man gets a DWI and his lawyer keeps putting it off until he can finally get it set up with a certain judge.  That’s what he hears, they are waiting for Judge So and So.  It just seems there is a racket going on where the lawyers know which judges will let them off and which ones won’t.  Discussion followed.   ERIC said he felt that after a 3rd offense they should never be allowed to drive again.  Smith said the 4th offense is a felony.  He is telling us what the law is not that he agrees with it.  ERIC said but do you not as a judge have discretion to order someone’s license being taken away for life.  Smith – No.  He does not think so, he will have to double check that.  Generally judges do not have to worry about taking licenses away because DMV does that automatically.  In general what our judges say is you are not to drive again until you are allowed to do so.  ERIC said two friends of his , one had 4 and one had 6 DWI’s.  Smith said he had hit the nail on the head with repeat offenders, and how to get them off the road.  It is a problem and he understands that.  Their hands are tied significantly by the current laws.  But he will say this, anybody charged with driving while impaired, a judge can send anybody to jail for up to 2 years on his first offense.  It is very, very rare and he is not saying it doesn’t happen but it is rare.  ERIC wanted to know if you could put them on an ankle bracelet.  He doesn’t want to put them in prison, that costs the tax payers  $35,000 a year…an ankle bracelet that would allow them to go to work but otherwise pretty much stay at home.  Smith said he did not want to speak for the district attorneys but they do not like to put those charged with DWI on ankle bracelets.   He likes that idea.  The real job for a district court judge in that type of situation is to try and distinguish between the person who made an accidental mistake…I had one beer too many… vs. the person that flouts their nose at the law.  ROMA asked if judges ever got the urge to strangle a person.  Smith said 10% of the people created 90% of the problems.  You see the same folks there time and time again and you are absolutely right.   Most of the attorneys go to juvenile court, and this sounds awful, but you can look at the kids there and you can generally (not always) tell which kids are going to come back.  It is sad.  It is not always the kids fault.  Sometimes you can look at the home life and say these kids are just not going to have a chance.  The same is true in district court.  The most a judge can give you is 180 days in jail. That is it.  Maybe he can run two sentences back to back (180 and 180) but certainly no more.  So a year in jail, that’s it.  When you have someone who keeps doing the same thing over and over again and shows no inclination to change his ways then he would say it was time to take him out.  He can give the people of Carteret County 6 months of freedom from this fellow.  He will just leave it at that.  SCOTT wanted to know what the qualifications are for running for district judge and number 2, he had told us about his winning and losses in the supreme court, how about when he was prosecutor.  He does not remember what his win loss record was as prosecutor, but he will tell us this much, he did win a lot more than he lost.  When you are a prosecutor it is much easier to win.  He thought he was the best trial lawyer in the world and then he went to the defense side, and most of the motions he had been winning, he started losing.  He is still proud of his record.  He does not keep an account because his record does not matter, at least to him because it is only as good as his next case.  The best indicator of future performance is past performance.  He will work hard on anybody’s case.  SCOTT wanted to know what qualifications are require to run for district judge.  Do you need a law degree, private practice, or what?….Smith said you need a law license and a pulse.  The first time he ever voted was in 1984 and Ronald Reagan was on the ballot for his second term.  The constitutional amendment was also on the ballot to allow only attorneys to be judges.  Actually he voted against that.  But it passed, so you have to be a lawyer to be a judge.  Believe it or not we have had some non lawyers as judges and they were pretty good judges.  KEN asked where he stood on legislating from the bench vs. the constitution.  He has a website that he thinks basically answers that question.  He encourages folks that haven’t been to his website, (electkirbysmith.com) to do so.  His full biography is there and his resume…he has tried to be as open and direct in everything.  He does not want anyone to have questions. The job of the Legislature is to pass laws.  The laws the Legislature passes are supposed to apply in general to all the people.  It is the job of the executive branch to prosecute those laws against the individual and the job of the courts to apply those laws to the individuals.  If the laws are going to be changed, it needs to be done by the legislature ..pure and simple.  He was at a meeting a week or so ago and they were talking about the tolls that were going to be put on the ferries.  People in Pamlico County are really upset over those tolls.  This one guy stood up and said he had a solution….he quoted some statute that he (Smith) had never heard of….no toll can be imposed unless it is approved by a turnpike authority or an RPO.  He said that toll was never approved by an RPO according to that statute.  He would argue that Hwy 306 that runs from Aurora  down to hwy 101 is a highway and goes across the Neuse River.  That is a highway.  They are talking about hiring a lawyer to get an injunction to stop the toll.  He said he was sitting there in the audience going “please don’t ask me about that, please don’t ask me”.  There are things it is ok to do, but he kind of thinks that goes to the meat of what you asked.  He will not say what his position would be on that, but he thinks water is water and roads are roads.  If the legislation wants to say no tolls on ferries without being approved by the RPO, that is the Legislature’s job.  He does not think it necessarily needs to be the job of a judge to sit there and say ’I know it says highway but I can expand that and say the Neuse River, there is no highway on it.  He does not like tolls, but judges are paid to apply the laws.  WYATT RIKE IV  asked about intent and what it means.  Smith said he did not want to get too law school but intent means your actions.  Let’s talk about that…you are in a car, driving down the road, and driving by here you see the TEA Party meeting and you don’t like the TEA Party.  You pull out a gun and shoot in the room.  You hit him and he falls down dead.  You get arrested and taken down town.  They say you killed Kirby Smith.  You say, didn’t intend to, didn’t even know he was in there.  Did you intend to kill him?  No he didn’t even know Smith, never intended to know him, didn’t even know he was here.  It was an accident that I killed Smith.  I just meant to shoot up the place.  But you shot knowing there were people in there and you knew there was the likelihood there was someone that would be dead.  You still intended the consequences of your actions.  Now that is legal.  That is not his personal opinion, that is just legal.  We do have accidents, but he thinks that we are all adults and he believes responsible adults should stand up and accept responsibility for their actions.  BOB asked who his competitors were running against him.  Smith said they are all from Craven County…David McFadyen III and Bernard Bush, the DSS attorney.  BOB asked wasn’t McFadyen a former prosecutor…and was told he was the son of the former prosecutor.  ERIC asked on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most liberal you can be and 1 being the most conservative, where do you see you fit in that scale personally.  Smith said he would say probably 2 or 3.  Smith said it appeared that BOB was trying to shut the meeting down, but if anyone had any more questions, he would be glad to hang around and answer them.  He thanked us for inviting him to come down tonight and meet with us and he really appreciated it.  (Applause)

Meeting adjourned.

CRYSTAL COAST TEA PARTY PATRIOTS
MINUTES OF
21 FEBRUARY 2012

The meeting was held at Golden Corral, Morehead City, NC
The meeting was called to order by BOB CAVANAUGH, Chairman
Pledge of Allegiance was led by BOB CAVANAUGH
Invocation by STEVEN BEST

BOB announced that DENNIS TOMASO had brought the new business cards in and he handed them out to those in attendance. Changes have been incorporated as suggested. The flag on the front is now in color and has Proud to be American included in the picture of the flag. www.cctp.info is now on the front in lieu of the back. The back information now includes the time for both the Morehead City and Western Carteret meetings and refers you to the website for locations, since our western group’s location changes according to the season; and gives our three main core beliefs ‘Fiscal Responsibility, Limited Government, Free Markets’. Thanks Dennis, they really look nice. See BOB for your copies or for additional copies.

BOB recognized the new faces in attendance tonight:
Robert Harrelson – from Newport. BOB asked him if SCOTT CARPENTER was the one who encouraged him to attend, and Robert affirmed yes, that he was in the Wildwood District of which SCOTT was chairman.
James Lawver who lives off the Hibbs Road on White Oak St. He then introduced his fiancee Hayley Hatfield. They, too were encouraged to attend by SCOTT. (Thank you SCOTT for helping to increase our attendance.)
Ida Vickroy and teen Klairi Hall who too were from Newport. Ida said she had been here before but it had been a while. She had attended when we met at Cox’s.
Willie Austin, from Cedar Island. EULA PARKIN asked how far it was to Cedar Island. Several said a-l-o-n-g-w-a-y! Someone else said about 40 miles. BOB said Carteret County is about 75 miles long. It is a long county.

BOB asked DENNIS if he knew where RUTH PARKER was tonight. She wasn’t here last week also. Did anyone know if she was sick or what. No one seemed to know.

BOB said, for the new folks, he would recap some on the things that went on last week. We talked about the NC Senatorial race, candidates running to replace Sen. Jean Preston, who is retiring at the end of this term. Someone asked if she was a lifelong Republican. HOWARD said you can near bout bet she is not a lifelong Republican because she was the head person at the Caswell Center in Kinston and he would say a Republican would never have gotten that position. BOB said he would agree with that; anyway, she was a two term NC Senator representing Carteret, Craven and Pamlico Counties and prior to that she was in the NC House of Representatives for something like six terms. FRED said she was there 14 years and had proven to be a very good conservative. BOB said she really did have a good voting record. She was also conscientious and hard working. She is entitled to retire. She has done her duty to her country and state and the people she represented. Any way, there are three Republicans running for that seat so there is going to be a primary runoff on May 8. There is Ken Jones, who is the mayor of Pine Knoll Shores; Norman Sanderson, who is the current House member for Craven and Pamlico Counties; and Randy Ramsey, who is also from Carteret County and owner of Jarrett Bay Boat Works. KEN LANG, who is not with us tonight but conducting the meeting of the Western Carteret Tea Party Group in Emerald Isle, did some research on Ramsey and found out that Ramsey is a long time contributor to the Democratic Party. He contributed heavily to Beverly Perdue’s campaign, Mike Easley’s, Mark Basnight’s, and the Democrat Party. That is just researching back to only 1997. He has donated almost $36,9500 to the Democrat Party any only something like $2,700 to the Republican Party. So that kind of tells us where the guy’s heart and loyalty lie. He is running as a Republican and several of the TEA Party went down to Beaufort at the Board of Elections on the first day of filing with protest signs and had a little demonstration. Someone ‘obviously’ tipped Randy off because he did not show up until the group protesting left. The word that got back to the group was that Greg Lewis had called Randy up and kept him informed as to what was going on. Anyway, we have a letter writing campaign going on of letters to the editor. They are being cycled through Jennifer Hudson, so that we don’t all inundate the newspaper all at once. She is going to portion them out so that the issue is kind of kept before the public on a continual basis up until the primary. We are not choosing sides between Ken Jones and Norman Sanderson, but we are definitely opposed to Randy Ramsey. He is a heavy supporter of the Democrat Party and doesn’t support anything the TEA Party stands for which is our three core principals “Fiscal Responsibility, Limited Government, and Free Markets”. BOB said he wrote a letter which he titled Democrat Sleeper Cells and Jennifer kicked it back to him saying she didn’t feel right sending it in since she is the communications coordinator for the county Republican party. He said that was fine, he would send it in himself, because he didn’t see where she felt that forwarding a letter on to the editor is necessarily an endorsement by her of the contents. Anyway, he said they would not get into that and he would handle it. Anyway, if you have not written a letter to the editor yet, opposing Randy Ramsey, you can go to our Crystal Coast TEA Party Face Book page and the information on Ramsey is there. You may have to scroll down through the various links to find it since so much data is posted there that these things (important) seem to get buried there rather rapidly. The problem is some folks are using our Face Book page as a depository for every kind of link they come across that they find interesting. It is supposed to be more of a communications forum, more particularly about local issues. Prefer we not use it to promote gay issues, or anti-gay issues, j’haid, and any such other type of issues. We prefer to keep it to more about our core values.

Some of our folks are infiltrating our government around here. Last night PEGGY and HOWARD were appointed to another committee. He asked PEGGY which committee they were on now. PEGGY said they would be responsible for going around and checking the rest and nursing homes, ensuring they were being operated correctly and the patients were receiving the care they required. She was not sure of all that it entailed, but they had been informed that they would have to attend a seminar on what will be required. BOB said they were on a couple of these committees; which ones were we on. PEGGY said she was on the Senior Center Advisory Board and HOWARD is on the Fire and EMT Budget Board. PEGGY said KEN LANG was also appointed to a committee last night, the ILA Board. Robin Comer had stepped down and appointed KEN in his place. Someone asked what was the ILA and HOWARD said it was the Inter Local Agency; an organization of the towns of Pelletier, Cape Carteret, Bogue, and Cedar Point. (BOB said in other words, the western end of the county). HOWARD said what they have done is form an organization to take over the fire department. It is a joint effort. BOB said as soon as they organized this ILA, the guy in charge snuck in something like a 25% pay raise for himself and a bunch of other people.

DENNIS said Ken Jones would like to come and talk to the TEA Party. BOB said he had already told him that anytime that fits into his schedule but had advised him that the first and third Tuesdays our attendance was less because the western end of the county met those nights. He said he had also had this same conversation with Terry Frank in Newport who was running for District 3 County Commissioner. He is a busy man, between trying to line up donors, run his business and such, but he knows it is a standing invitation. BOB said in about another week or two, if he hasn’t heard from these guys, he is going to ring their chimes at the Republicans’ meeting. DENNIS asked for one more quick question. You were talking about Ramsey; why doesn’t the Republican party vet some of these people and put out some information on them. From what he is hearing this guy (Ramsey) is definitely a RINO (Republican in Name Only). BOB said he tried to bring that up at the county courthouse when the county Republican party executive committee had their meeting. He stood up and spoke and he was pretty quickly interrupted and told by Greg Lewis who felt he was campaigning. FRED has been doing some digging on this so he turned the question over to him. FRED said one of the problems is the party can not get involved in the primaries. DENNIS said he understood that but this guy is running as a Republican. He would be slammed all over the place if he was a Democrat. FRED said what he had on Randy Ramsey was someone came to him and said that at those boat works down there they had a bunch of illegals that ride a bus from Havelock to the boat works. They have a contract with a civilian contractor with a green card driving the bus to carry the illegals). He has an address and he has somebody in the town hall in Havelock working on it for him. If he can find that bus and where it leaves and where it goes in there, he plans to get a video tape of it and he wants to get it before they start having these forums for these candidates. What he is trying to find out right now is if there is anybody down east or anybody that got laid off a job at Jarrett Boat Works or Atlantic Veneer, he needs to get a hold of him. He would like to talk to him because he may need some help in that area down there. He thought Wayne Willis because he knows Randy Ramsey real good. HOWARD said Ken Davis knows him. He thinks they went to high school together and he had family down there. KEN LANG is trying to find out on the computer how many employees he pays social security on and his sales and profits for the last three years. If he is paying a whole lot less employees on the books and his sales went way up, there is something wrong there somewhere. So we are trying to prove he is using illegals. If he can find what he is looking for, he going to send the SBI in for further investigation. (There was some discussion on social security numbers and e-verifying.) FRED said all he could say was he had discovered about the bus driving the illegals to the Boat Works and they were paid in cash and the employees were also paid in cash. DENNIS said he understood this but it still did not answer his question why the Republicans were unwilling to vet anyone running under the Republican banner. What if by some quirk of fate this sucker would win the primary? FRED said he wished that Ken Jones and Norman Sanderson were not running against each other. They are both good conservatives. DENNIS said that is what his concern is. This guy (Ramsey) has got a lot of money and you’ve got Jones and Sanderson running; this sucker could win. It is crazy. HOWARD said the cold hard facts of life, there is a group that wants to rule. And they can raise a lot of money so they can choose the candidate. He will give you another example: he wishes he had kept it, several of us went to the Reagan Day Dinner and that speaker (Ilario Pantano) who was there, an exMarine from Wilmington that ran for Congress the last time (who had been tried for murder against Afghanistanis and found innocent) was an excellent speaker. He mostly spoke on the Moslem and Christian Religions. While he had been a speaker at the CPAC meeting, he had gone into a books store nearby to check out their Moslem and Christian books. He found several books on the Moslem religion but only one on Christianity. They had written that book so that it sounded like the Christian religion was very violent by going back to the Old Testament. They did not even mention the New Testament and Jesus, where love and salvation was found. The books made the Moslem religion out to be the good guys. Anyway, he has just read an article where the Republican party in Wilmington is raising money to support another guy who is running against him. You have these people that are determined to control and they are going to control any way they can. DENNIS said he was not disputing what we were all saying, but his concern is you have Greg Lewis, Chairman of the Republican Party in Carteret County, and not saying a word about the problems with Ramsey and not wanting any one else to get involved with vetting the candidates. FRED said he was hoping to get delegates from all the precincts and then they could finally get rid of Greg, but over half of the precincts don’t even bother to participate. He has talked to various people about running against him, but so far no one wants to challenge him. (His term does not expire until next year.) BOB said some of the stuff he learned that is going on behind the scenes involving people and putting pieces of the puzzle together, Greg Lewis had every intention of running for Jean Preston’s seat. The rug got ripped out from underneath him when Norm Sanderson declared and Representative Pat McElraft and Asa Buck, our county sheriff, immediately endorsed Norm Sanderson. Now the other rumor he was hearing was that they got Randy Ramsey from Greg Lewis. So there is all kinds of intrigue. DENNIS said and this is the man in charge of the Republican Party here. It is crazy. BOB said yes, a lot is going on in the background and he is just glad he is involved because otherwise we would be in the complete dark about what is going on. The same thing is going on up in District 1 which is Beaufort, Hyde, Dare counties, all the way up to the Virginia border, which used to be Mark Basnight’s seat. A fellow by the name of Art Williams was lobbying the Democrats to be appointed by the governor to fill in the rest of Basnight’s term. Well they didn’t pick him, they picked some other guy, so now this Art Williams, this past October announced he was changing parties from Democrat to Republican. And who do you think was there for the gala of announcement, non other that Walter B. Jones; another big time party switcher. His letter about the Democrat Sleeper Cells was probably denied because he was talking about both of these things and how the higher ups in the party were manipulating things to pick the senators east of I95. The lady that is the editor of the Beaufort (county) Observer wrote him and said they were getting ready to run a big story on stuff going on in District 1, and then all this stuff down in District 2 was news to her, so she wants to run with a much bigger article and he is supposed to meet with her when she can get these other people all together at one point and time. He told her to let him know and he would be up there. KEN LANG wants to go along with him. HOWARD just told us there was a bunch of hanky panky going on down in the Wilmington District with Ilerio Pantano. Wanted to know if Pantano was running for an office down there. HOWARD said he was running for Congress, again against Mike McIntire. He ran against McIntire before and just bearly lost. From what he has picked up this week, there are some of the wheels in the Republican party have recruited some body to run against Patano in the Republican primary. BOB said if you listen to Norm Sanderson, part of his campaign spiel is, ’don’t let the folks in Raleigh pick your senator for you’. It is up to you to determine who your representative is going to be. There seems to be a lot of in fighting within the Republican party over this stuff and that is a lot of the reason why they are trying to push the TEA Party off to the side because we are a big cog in their wheel. FRED said at the next Republican meeting he is going to ask Greg Lewis to his face, right there, ’were you the one responsible for warning Randy Ramsey about the demonstration?’ BOB said he would like to have his tape recorder on for that. HOWARD said, allegedly had been to Raleigh the week before and had told someone about talking to Tillis or one of the top dogs. BOB said he was sure he had met with all of them he could up there. Money has a lot to do with the outcomes. Everyone is participating a big Republican landslide. They kind of feel like whoever they throw up with an R next to their name is going to get elected to the state legislature. If the person is affiliated with the Democrats they feel they can get even more votes and make it a landslide victory and it makes him feel like the folks up there in Raleigh are more concerned about the number of “R’s” and “D’s” that are in the Legislature. If there are a lot more R’s than D’s then that controls all the committees, chairmenships, and everything within the Legislature. He thinks they just want to really solidify the Republican hold regardless of the whether they are really Republican at heart just to have the shear number of Republicans holding office. They think once these people are voted in they can hold them to the party line, but they do not have control over them. Look at Walter Jones, he’s a good example. FRED asked HOWARD what organization that held that fund raiser for Ramsey, the automobile association? HOWARD said no, he had seen an invitation, and it just named a couple of dealers and where they were having it. He said KEN had the invitation and he had asked HOWARD to go down the list to see how many names he recognized and just about every car dealer in New Bern was involved. It was a fund raiser for Harry Brown, but Harry Brown as far as he knows doesn’t have any opposition, so he will probably raise money to pass out to other candidates or give it to the party. There were also some attorneys on the list. He may have recognized about a fourth of them. There was a crowd of people on the list. It is going to be a big money raiser. They list them in different categories of how much money is donated to sponsor. Joe Alcoke is one of them; the boys that own the Buick dealership; Dodge/Chrysler; Ford; and various dealerships that are owned by Joe Alcoke. Brown is doing the same thing that Mark Basnight did. Basnight had a huge war chest of money that he would divvy out and that way he had them in his back pocket. BOB said it was up to us like minded people to get the word out about Randy Ramsey locally and we are also going to try this on a much larger scale with other counties. Where we come in as the TEA Party this coming primary election, May 8, remember during 2010 we had little ballots of recommended candidates to vote for, that we handed out, ran in the paper, and a number of us were at the polls where we sat at little tables with TEA Party banners and people would come up and we would give them our recommended list of to vote for candidates. We are going to do the same thing this time but this time it will be at the primary and try to educate the voters. By not having Randy Ramsey on our list, and with the massive amounts of letters to the editor in opposition to him; by the time it comes time to have the vote we will be encouraging the voters to decide whether they want Norm Sanderson or Ken Jones. Basically the ballot is going to say ‘the following candidates and amendments are in keeping with the TEA Party principals’. We can not use words like ‘vote for’, or ‘support’; otherwise we fall under the umbrella of the campaign finance laws and we do not want to get into all that. BOB said speaking of candidates, does anyone here know Harry Taylor. He saw a thing last night from Greg Lewis that Taylor’s filed to run for District 5. (Howard said it was in this morning’s Jacksonville paper and if it is the Harry he knows, he is about a year or so older than he is and he has known him since he was a teenager) Discussion on who this Harry Taylor is.
BOB said he had googled him and found that he had donated to Pat McElraft’s campaign in 2002 a hundred dollars. That was all he could find out. HOWARD said he had known and worked for Harry over 30 years and he is a conservative.

BOB said this past weekend a number of them had gone over to STEVEN BEST’s house. He has converted his garage to a movie theater with approximately 45 seating. We watched two DVD’s. One was called “Agenda, Grinding Down America” which was about the socialist movement within the US. He got there late and missed the first movie “Iranium” which was about Iran getting nuclear power. STEVE informed BOB that his projector has burned out and he will need $480.36 to replace it. He has asked the TEA Party to step in and help with that. We will not bring that up tonight as an issue to vote upon until the rest of our group that regularly attends here is in attendance. The last he heard from NANCY BOCK, Treasurer, before she disappeared with the treasury, we had about $1,500.00.

BOB introduced Wayne Schriever, who is with the Carteret Literacy Council. He told us that he had been with us back last fall and asked for $100.00 donation to help sponsor the Carteret Literacy Council‘s 10th Annual Literacy Spelling Bee. He was just bringing us a copy of the program in which our advertisement was published. He said we were one of the three organizations that donated to this project, ‘the Carteret County Republican Party’, ‘the Crystal Coast Republican Women‘, and ‘Crystal Coast TEA Party Patriots’. All the others were businesses. EULA discussed the methods of teaching used by the Literacy Council and the benefits derived with Mr. Schriever. He told us how much he appreciated our support and hoped we would continue. He would see us again in the fall.

BOB called on ERIC BROYLES. He said he had been communicating with Pat McElraft trying to come up with an understanding of how they proportion out the money for the schools and she has agreed to speak to our group, targeting for March 7. He does not have it finalized yet. ERIC wanted to give us a heads up on what is going on there because he thinks we need to understand the money apportionment. Some students and some counties are getting $13,000.00 per student while our students only get $4,900.00 per student. BOB said March 6 is the first Tuesday and we have a split group that day. Could he make it the 13th. ERIC said he would check it out. HOWARD said it was mentioned last night. They had a program at the County Commissioners meeting and talked about a mental health program and how they are combining the counties and we are becoming part of 5 counties. Right now it is Carteret/Onslow. The same thing is going on there. The amount they are getting per person varies widely from county to county. ERIC said he thought it was based on what they call wealth distribution. From what he has learned there are 4 different levels. 1 being the poorest counties and 4 being the richer counties. Carteret falls in level 4. He doesn’t know if that is the right thing to be basing how our kids are being funded by the state. He thinks it is still an old Democratic scheme that the money goes typically to those who normally vote Democrat. If that is the case, the Democrats are using that as a mechanism to possibly secure and buy votes. That is not fair to our students here. They are entitled to an equal quality education.

Secondly, ERIC said he did not know if we saw the article in the newspaper the other day about the closing of Marine Science Lab Charter School (Cape Lookout). Cape Lookout right now services those students that have actually been abandoned by our school system. They were kicked out, saying they (the teachers) could not work with them and now Dr Novey stated in that article that they would accept them back with open arms. How do you accept someone back with open arms when you had expelled them from the school system? It is a known fact that Dr. Novey is not in favor of competition which the charter schools represent. He was not in favor of that bill that was recently passed to increase the number of charter schools because it holds them accountable for the job they do. BOB wanted to know why they are closing the charter school. ERIC said apparently they are short funds of about $46,000.00. They expected an enrollment of over 100 students and only ended up with something like 64. According to Mr. Schriever it was their own fault for not budgeting correctly. While he is all for the school, they were irresponsible in preparing their budget. That is true but he also in thinking back we had a $500,000.00 ’gift card’ that was given to the school system after only two months and we are here shooting down a charter school that should be equally supported as well as our county school system. He thinks that we as voters need to inquire, call, talk about….HOWARD said if you will look, he had no idea who was on the board of directors, but if you look at who is the Board of Directors Chairman and the directors are, it will tell you the story, if you know it. Mr. Schriever agreed. HOWARD said he is not competent in his opinion. ERIC said the article said on December 15, 2011 that the board had approved another year for Cape Lookout. Two years ago this school had to go to court to get the necessary support. He said his mother-in-law is a teacher and she tends to be on the liberal side of the world, but she did fight for this school and put a lot of effort into it, ensuring it existed and up and running because she was doing a lot of teaching for those children that have difficulty responding. The article said this school has done these children a world of good. They cannot compete or exist in a current school system as it is. We all know we have teachers that expect perfect kids. ERIC feels we should look into it. If there is something we can do, he thinks competition is good, he thinks we need to put our other school system in checkmate, because for 5 years the educational testing indicates that the quality of reading, math, and writing has gone down in this county. HOWARD said he totally agreed with ERIC that something needs to be done about Cape Lookout School. It should survive, but the board is one of their biggest problems. BOB said he understood that somewhere back around Christmas that the state was on track to extend their charter for another 3 years and then when they came up with this budgetary shortfall, they decided to yank the plug on them. Is that what happened? Someone said Morehead City owns the building and the school is so far in arrears with the rent and utilities that Morehead City is paying. Maybe if they had someplace else to go, but he read in the paper that is not the case. ERIC said he is in favor of completion among the schools because that is the only thing to check on…Mr Schriever said you cannot have a school like that that is irresponsible for the funds they have either. Believe it or not they do not even have enough money to pay for the heating system and the heat has been off in the building most of the winter. This drew much discussion. ERIC said he had brought it up to see if there was anything we could do. He knew we could make some phone calls to the County Commissioners, saying look this upcoming budget please try to make sure Cape Lookout gets their fair share. That might help the situation. He does not want to see any charter schools die in our county. We only have two. He would like to see more started. SUSAN RYNAS said she had talked to the gentleman who is running for State School Superintendent at the Reagan Dinner. BOB said he would like to get both candidates that are running to come and talk with us. It appears they both want more charter schools.

HOWARD said there is a guy running for judge named Kirby Smith that is getting a lot of signs up here in the county. He has had them up in Craven for some time. Does anyone know who he is or anything about him? BOB said there is a web site called judgepedia and you can go to NC and it will list all the judges in the various districts. We are in district 3A. HOWARD said he didn’t think he was currently a judge. BOB said this website will list the current judges and when their terms are up. There are currently seven judges but Waddell is retiring at the end of this term and Mills in New Bern has been appointed to replace him as Chief Justice of the District Court System. So he does not know who is going to run for Waddell’s seat, but all seven are up for re-election in 2012. When he was digging in the background of all of them, he found that all of them had been appointed by Easley or Perdue. So we can assume they are all liberal just based on the Democrat Party affiliation; including Mills, who was appointed by Easley. He doesn’t think that any in the Superior Court are up for election and Judge Newby is on the State Supreme Court. He is up for re-election and we definitely want to endorse him on our voting ballot. Right now there is a 4-3 majority of conservative vs. liberals on the state supreme court and if Newby falls to a liberal that will tilt the state supreme court on to the liberal side, so we really need to make sure Newby gets re-elected. His campaign slogan is “Scooby Dooby vote for Newby”. That way you won’t forget it. FRED said he had a lot of judges, even some who are Democrats, supporting him. He doesn’t think anyone so far has filed against him. Discussion on Karen Alexander who is a judge. Main thing they could find out about her was she was involved in a non-custodial fathers trying to ensure visitation rights group. ERIC said we really need to start working on our list of candidates.

JERE GEURIN said there is also a website that you can go to that ranks the judges. They have a rating system and they give you a numerical score for each of the judges that are now on the bench. He couldn’t remember the name of the site, but you might be able to just google NC Judges Rating System and find it. He said he would try to remember to bring the website next week. Question was raised as to who was rating the judges and JERE said he thought the bar association was.

DENNIS wanted to know if they had their teleconference last night. BOB said yes, but he had a problem getting into it. DENNIS wanted to know also about the trip to Washington on March 24. BOB said the TEA Party was pushing it to be a rather significant event. Buses are already planned from the west coast. It is the Repeal Rally, because that is when the Supreme Court starts hearing the case on Obamacare. You can not protest or rally outside of the Supreme Court so the TEA Party has permits to have a rally on the east lawn of the Capitol Building which faces the Supreme Court Building. Americans for Prosperity is having another similar event there on the 27th. The TEA Party Patriots are having different training events going on on the 25th and 26th, so there may be folks that want to stay over for all the events. Someone said there were buses leaving out of Wilmington. STEVE said he thought it was being conducted by the Civitas.
It just said $15.00 to register and sign up for your tickets. BOB said he go a hold of Mark Hagar who is the NC Coordinator for the TEA Party Patriots. He is oven in Charlotte. He is talking about us linking up with the buses coming from the west but BOB is not impressed with that idea. He was floating around in the Wilson TEA Party website and about 15 or so people were wanting to go to DC and wanting to know if the Wilson TEA Party was going to organize a bus or if they knew of anyone that was organizing a bus. He could have responded and said we were trying to get one out of the Crystal Coast TEA Party but it was a lot of trouble to get in the chat room; having to give a users name, pass word, etc. and then your email box gets choked up with spam and junk mail and he has enough of that already.

BOB said speaking about Agenda 21, he and STEVEN went to Kinston last night for the Agenda 21 seminar and Bob Pruitt went along and some other local folks as well as some from New Bern. They had a pretty good turnout, probably 50 or 60 people were there. The Deli right there next to the Court House was packed. They were dragging tables in from the back rooms and trying to find chairs for people to sit in. The fellow that gave the presentation was based on a presentation he had heard from some other individual. It was good but it wasn’t comprehensive. It didn’t really cover everything. If you didn’t know anything about Agenda 21 at all, it would basically stimulate you to learn more about it and start doing your own research. BOB then basically overviewed what Agenda 21 was for those who have not been attending our regular meetings. The whole scheme of this thing is to restructure society around a plan to occupy less land.

JERE again reminded us about the Marriage Amendment that would be on the ballot in the primary. Please vote for and encourage your friends and neighbors to vote also. It affects not only you but your children also.

Meeting adjourned.
Minutes submitted by PEGGY GARNER, Secretary.

CCTPP Meeting Minutes, February 14, 2012

CRYSTAL COAST TEA PARTY PATRIOTS
MINUTES OF
14 FEBRUARY 2012

NOTE;  Secretary PEGGY GARNER was absent tonight, but her recorder was in attendance.  Please bear with the following:

Meeting was held at the Golden Corral, Morehead City, NC
Meeting called to order by Chairman BOB CAVANAUGH
Pledge of Allegiance was led by ROMA WADE
Invocation by Representative Norman Sanderson

BOB apologized for the meeting starting late, because he and KEN LANG had been on the radio with Lockwood Phillips.  Wanted to know where HOWARD and PEGGY were tonight.  KEN said they were on a Valentine’s date.  BOB said why, they’ve only been married about 80 years, right?  DIANE said that is why they are still married.

BOB recognized our visiting dignitaries: House Representative Norman Sanderson, who is running for Jean Preston’s seat in the Senate.  Asked Mr. Sanderson if he was District 3 or District 1 right now, to which he replied House District 3, which is all of Pamlico, and about 75% of Craven.  He also recognized County Commissioner Chairman Robin Comer.  BOB asked about the protest tonight.  STEVE BEST said he understood it was at the Train Depot in the park.  BOB asked who were they protesting?  STEVE said they were protesting against the Marriage Amendment.  BOB wanted to know if there was a big crowd down there.  STEVE said probably 50 or so and he thought the newspaper and radio were there also.  BOB also introduced Doug Raymond, a former radio personality.  BOB asked, didn’t he have the talk station before Lockwood.  Mr. Raymond said he worked on the talk station, Lockwood has always had it.  BOB said you (Mr. Raymond)  also took over Frank Rouse’s TV operation and you are now soon to be senator Sanderson’s campaign chairman as I understand it.  Mr. Raymond said he was an advisor.  He did not like titles.  He was helping Norm in any way he could.

BOB asked if there were any new faces here tonight.  He asked who the lady was with STEVE tonight.  STEVE said it was his wife Susie and tonight was their anniversary.

BOB then talked about the little protest rally (some of the TEA Party folks showed up in Beaufort as well as some non-TEA Party folks) against Mr. Randy Ramsey who is running for Jean Preston’s seat under the Republican ticket.  He is a registered Republican.  BOB went back and checked the 2010 registration and party affiliation and he has been a registered Republican as far back as he checked.  But he has been a real heavy donor to the Democrat Party and Beverly Perdue, Mike Easley, and also Mark Basnight.  He said he did not want to pick a dog in this fight but the TEA Party is a very conservative organization and we have three basic principles that we are guided by.  To try to get those principals disseminated, that is our goal, to educate the voters.  It is one issue we thought was needed to bring to attention, and we hoped it would be a media event and we were led to believe that there would be TV and other media there.  But just three newspaper reporters showed up but that still will get the word out; along with KEN and I being on the radio tonight.  KEN spoke up and said they did have channel 14 stop by but without cameras.  He gave the reporter with channel 14 a copy of the fact sheet they had made up to pass out.  The reporter didn’t even have a notebook or anything to write on.  KEN said he thought he was just passing by and noticed the crowd.  BOB said he was surprised to hear that Ramsey was waiting until after we left to show up to register.  KEN said it was obvious that he got a phone call letting him know we had left.  BOB said anyway he hoped we shot a torpedo in the side of his submarine trying to sneak in under the public umbrella.  Someone in the audience said they were trying to take care of him.  They are trying to prove that there is a bus that leaves Havelock each morning loaded with illegals that goes to Jarrett’s Boat Works.  BOB said he heard that they were investigating that.  BOB said Jarrett has more than 25 employees too.  The member said Jarrett was not the only one using illegals, there were several more doing the same thing.  Where we have been getting that this bus leaves Havelock, they contracted with (Greenbar?) to haul bus loads to Jarrett Boat Works and he gets paid for all of them in cash.  If we can get them on camera, we can take care of Randy Ramsey.  BOB called on ROMA WADE who had his hand up.  ROMA said he just wanted to say, ’when that goes, every boat builder out there by Jarrett Bay is gone also.”  BOB said as a landscaper one of the things that really amazed him was when he retired from the Marine Corps was the lack of work ethic out here amongst our younger folks.  He was totally taken by surprise by that.  He had no idea how much power the youth uniform code of justice had over the young folks to make sure they worked.

BOB announced that he, KEN and FRED DECKER were going to have to leave early tonight and he believed our distinguished guests would be leaving early also.  They had the Court House Meeting.  He would be leaving the rest of the meeting in the hands of ERIC BROYLES, Vice Chairman. Before they had to leave he wanted to take this opportunity to ask Norman Sanderson to have the floor and speak to us about whatever he felt like.

Norman thanked BOB and said he just wanted to commend  him and KEN  for the outstanding job they did on the radio.  He had done interviews with Lockwood.  ‘They can be a little tricky at times.  Lockwood is a good man and he means well.  Anyway, I thank you for giving me a couple of minutes of your time tonight.  I want to just start out by giving you a little background on me.  I have lived in this area since 1972.’  Used to live right next door to Willie and since 1972 Norm has raised both of his children here.  They went to high school in Pamlico County, graduated from Wake Forest University.  His daughter, three grandsons and her husband live just ten miles down the road from them so that is a blessing to have them that close. But he wants to talk about himself a little bit.  He knows he could spend this whole ten minute period talking about his opposition and the people running against him but he wants to tell us where he is coming from).  From 2008, he believes, they started back up the Coastal Tax Payers Association which is his (and the Craven area) TEA Party version of what we do here in Carteret.  When they got the CTPA going again, he was the Vice President.  They used to have one years ago but it kind of died, he and the others lost interest, but when they began to see what was happening across our state and nation and even in our own county, a group got together and said we need to bring the CTPA back on line because we need someone out here that is a watch dog for the general public, because most of the public doesn’t have a clue as to what is going on.  If they hear it on the 6:00 news that is great but who can believe what you hear anymore.  And so they re-started that organization and he was really pleased to be a part of the first rally that they had.  They had about 1500 folks that marched from the court house to Union Park in New Bern and had a fantastic rally about bringing life to what was going on in our government.  He is just like those of us here tonight, he believes in the same three basic principals that BOB mentioned.  He believes in less government, less government intrusion in our lives; the government has far too many tentacles in our lives; believes our government costs us way too much money for what they do for us, and so he believes in lower taxes for everybody concerned.  He believes that we, the people/the citizens are the ones that have to rise up and take our state and country back because if we just let government go unchecked, it is just going to continue to get bigger and bigger.  It is like fire; as long as you keep giving it fuel, it is just going to grow and never satisfy itself.  So, what you do, when you talk about educating the voters, and that is what we have to do; we have to educate and let them know what is really going on.  When we have someone come along that says they are one thing but all the indicators are pointing that they are something else, then we as citizens have a right to really ask the hard questions.  We need to get answers to our questions.  We don’t need to take anything for granted just because somebody claims to be a good person and they claim to be on your side; I say let them show me the proof.  He will take the record that he has for the one term he has served.  They went through probably one of the hardest legislative terms that they have ever had to do.  It was the first time in one hundred years that the Republicans had control of the House and the Senate and they were left with a three billion dollar shortfall in their budget, which is required by law to be balanced.  They did it without raising taxes.  It took a lot of hard decisions;  they took a lot of hits; a lot of criticism; were demonized; and were told everything in the state is going to die because of what they had done and he is here to tell us that none of that is going to happen.  Our government had gotten so big that even government itself didn’t know how big it was.  We did those hard things.  We let the sales tax expire; and let the special taxes on couples who made over a certain amount of money, go away; and we did it without increasing….and he was proud of it.  He had the ninth most conservative rating in the North Carolina House on his voting record last year.  He will put his voting record up against anybody else’s.  Any time we could reduce the size of government, he voted for it.  Any time they could reduce taxes, he voted for it.  Anytime they could reduce regulatory forms that were killing small businesses, he voted for it.  That is the only thing that is going to turn our county and our state around is to get government out of the way.  As you have heard many times ‘let business take over, cause business knows how to do it’.
Now, he wanted to talk a little bit about this race…. There have been rumblings for the last few weeks.  He made up his mind several months ago because people came to him and said ‘you know there is a possibility that Senator Preston is not going to run again’.  He said he had had the pleasure of working with Sen. Preston this last year.  They would sit in each others office and talk about the things that affected Craven and Pamlico (which is part of her district) and also those things which affect Carteret, too.  So when she made the announcement that she was not going to run, after some prayer and talking to his family, he said he felt it was just a natural thing, and if he was ever going to do this, now is the time.  He already represents two of these counties and he will just envelop and bring in Carteret County because a lot of the same problems and difficulties that you all look at, they face the same thing in Craven and Pamlico.  They did not know about the recruiting that was taking place because they have some people in high positions that like to pick and choose who will come in and serve.  As far as he is concerned, nobody in Raleigh should pick and choose who will represent you in the state senate or house.  It is not their decision.  It is your decision and you are smart enough to look at a candidate and listen to that candidate, talk to that candidate and ask him questions and listen to his responses and ask him his vision and then you are smart enough to choose who it is you want to go up there and represent you.  He knows we are in a battle.  He has met Mr. Ken Jones over at Pine Knoll Shores.  He is a fine gentleman.  They had a conversation Saturday night at the Carteret Reagan Day luncheon.  A campaign ought to be about issues and how they as candidates will go about solving those issues.  That is what he and Mr. Jones came to in agreement.  That is what their campaign is going to be about.  After this is over, whoever comes out on top, we pledged each others total support that we would jump in and help the other person win this seat because we need to keep this seat in conservative hands.  We know we are in a battle, because of the very magnitude of the amount of money that this third party has.  Money means a lot, and it has always been in the past that he who spent the most money won the election.  That did not happen two years ago when he ran against a three term incumbent who outspent him almost three to one.  He took almost 70% of the vote and it was because of people out working hard and everybody played a part.  Everybody did what they could do, whether it was $10.00, 50.00 or $100.00; or whether it was putting on a teeshirt and marching in a parade; whether it was working at a poll outside handing out literature; whatever it took.  That’s what we did and we can do it again.  I don’t care how much money this man says he has.  All we would like is for him to stand up and tell us where he got it from.  We feel he has to be open to you the voter.  He does not need to come out here as a conservative and say we are going to Raleigh or Washington; we are going to be transparent and let you know everything we do and then go in the back room and do the same thing that has been done for the last one hundred years.  If that is the way it has got to be then we are all in trouble and I don’t know where our country is going to end up.  All of our victories, all of our freedoms, everything that we have worked hard for in 2010, it is on the line this year because if we lose this election in Washington; if we lose this election in Raleigh, if we don’t get a conservative governor; and if we don’t keep the conservative legislature so that we can finish those things that the governor vetoed on us, we are in trouble.  Not only are we going to suffer but our children are going to suffer also.  So, he said he is here tonight to ask for support, help, anyway that you can.  If  you would like to make a financial donation, he just happens to have some financial donation envelops.  Every bit helps.  Don’t think that what you can do is not going to make a difference because it will.  We have got to really dig this year and do everything we can folks, because you know what is going to come in here during the Presidential election.  We know what is going to happen when the Democrats come to Charlotte for their convention.  There is going to be more money spent in North Carolina because he thinks North Carolina will be a key state.  The people who have it now will not want to give it up and they will not give it up without an all out fight.  We are here and hopefully ready for that fight because our future’s at stake.  He said he would be glad to answer any questions.  ERIC BROYLES said “Norm, you say you are for the reduction of taxes.  What can you do about the gasoline tax?”  Norman said that is why he wants to go to the Senate.  The House voted to cap gasoline tax but they could not get it through the Senate.  The House were going to hold it where it was before this last forced increase and don’t think that it won’t go up January again unless we can do something with it.  One thing he has to say about the gas tax is ‘we have the highest one but most people don’t understand why’.  We have the highest gas tax in the southeast because North Carolina’s DOT does all the maintenance, all the repair work, and all the new construction in the state and we don’t charge the local county anything.  A lot of these states who have lower gas taxes makes the counties raise their property taxes so they can do the maintenance on local roads.  We don’t do that in NC.  It does level it out a little but it is still too high.  ERIC said ’when gasoline goes up a dollar, it is not fair.’  Norman agreed.  ERIC said going up in relationship with the cost of living that is a different issue.  Norman said they say it is based on cost of oil.  Asphalt is a petroleum product and so when oil goes up so does the cost of asphalt.  We have been looking for years for a different formula, but so far nobody has been smart enough to come up with one.  He knows there is one out there we just have to keep looking.  Our gasoline tax should not be tied to what foreign countries charge us for petroleum.  ERIC said we need to get an energy bill passed.
JEFFERY CRANE  said he was a little confused about the gas tax is for the DOT?   Norman said the DOT gets most of their money from our gas tax and from the fees that we pay for highways.  JEFF said he was driving down 101 the other day and there were some people on a curve and they were mowing the grass.  Usually they have people out there to slow you down and flag men, etc. because it was a dangerous situation.   They said they did not have enough money to have flaggers when they are doing projects like that.  He was curious as to what Norm thought about this.  BOB said his question was why were they mowing grass in February?  Norm said Tell you what we have to do,  and it is just as important as the presidential election or the election of a Republican governor.  When and only when we elect a Republican governor can we change the departments in NC from the top down and put people in there that are going to do better at running things.  Someone said ‘with common sense”?   Norm said right.
Someone (did not recognize the voice) said he would like to speak on Norman’s character.  He had known him for forty plus years.  He had lived across the ditch from him.  He is the most straight forward, honest, upright person you will ever meet in life.  He is a good Christian also.  They go way back.  Norm said thank you Will (so I presume the speaker was Willie Austin.)  ERIC said he would also like to give Norm a compliment on what he did January 5th?  They over road a governor veto to control the way monies are collected by the school’s unions/non-unions/teachers associations, (NCEA)  whatever you want to call them. ERIC wanted to commend them on that, because he didn’t think anyone should be compelled to pay fees.  Norm said we could spend a half day talking about that but we don’t have the time tonight.  It is an organization that the state does not need to be helping in any way what so ever.   Someone spoke up about the film industry in NC has gotten quite a bit of pull somehow.  They are getting millions of dollars off the state now.  Norm said he thinks it is an absolute waste.  He has not seen anything come out of Hollywood in the last 15 years that he thought was worth anything.  That was Gov. Perdue.  She has gone and courted the film industry to come to Wilmington and a couple of other areas and she has lured them here with a whole lot of tax payer incentives.  He doesn’t think anyone of them can show where it benefits…after we pay what we have to pay to get them here, he doesn’t see where it benefits the state.  They bring in their own people, their own equipment…..we get a little bit of stuff around when they are eating, sleeping and housing…but then they are gone and take everything with them and we have given them a lot of money to make junk.  Cause that is what comes out of it.  BOB said they are part of the union so they are forced to hire union employees and we are a right-to-work-state.

BOB said he was going to cut this short because some of us have to go to Beaufort to the court house.  He asked Norm to leave some of his donation envelopes with those who remain.  BOB told Robin Comer that he wasn’t running against anybody, but did he want to say a few words before they left. Robin thanked him but said not at this time.

BOB said the TEA Party Patriots, Jenny Beth Martin and Mark Meckler, have published a book and all the proceeds go to the TEA Party Patriots.  He had a free complimentary copy which he is putting in our library.  Anybody can check it out free of charge any time you want.  Someone asked if we also had a video library.  BOB said we have a video library and STEVEN BEST, President and CEO of the Best Productions Corp., also known as The Cave, operates his home movie theater that seats 45 with various videos he has purchased and found.  The next event will be this Saturday, February 18th at 3:00 pm at which time two movies will be shown,  “Iranium” and “Agenda, Grinding America Down”, about communism in America.  Call STEVE at 723-0493.  Hoping to have a pot luck meal also.  (So, if you would like to attend and bring something to eat, please fell free to do so.  It will be appreciated.)

FRED said he wanted to tell Norm one thing…. during the primaries parties do not have people at the polls.  The TEA Party does.  Our plan is to work every one of them or at least as many as we can.

BOB called on EULA PARKIN.  EULA said she was not going to talk about Muslims this week.  She was going to talk about the owls.  She had bought copies of booklets and wanted to read a couple of clips from them.  If you are interested in the book, it costs $1.00, however, if you want to give more than $1.00 it will be appreciated.  On page 29, “the organizers for OWS worked hard to portray their movement as being composed of people who live next door to you and have been financially blindsided by the 1% who allegedly control America.  But New York magazine revealed a very different reality in a story published on October 2, 2011.  A poll it conducted with 100 protestors in Manhatten disclosed that half were in their 20’s and 35% were of the opinion that the US government is no better than Al Quida.  While 45% said Capitalism can’t be saved and is apparently immoral.  Another survey of 200 OWS protestors 65% said the government has a moral responsibility to guarantee all citizens access to affordable health care, a college education and a secure retirement regardless of the cost.  77% supported tax hikes on the wealthiest Americans…52% had participated in political movements before…98% endorsed breaking the law to achieve their goals….and 31% said they would support violence to promote their agenda.  Doug Shown(?) the Democratic pollster whose firm conducted the survey concluded that the OWS activists hold values that are dangerously out of touch with the broad mass of the American people and are bound by a big commitment to radical left wing policies.”  She then read from the last two pages of the book:  Barbarism vs. Civilization.  As a way of normalizing Occupy Wall Street, it’s supporters have tried to suggest that it is the opposite side of the coin to the TEA Party demonstrations.  President Obama has helped to propagate this view of observing that ‘in some ways the OWS demonstrations are not that different from some of the protests that we saw coming from the TEA Party.  According to Vice President Joe Biden, OWS and the TEA Party have a lot in common, since they both think the system is not fair.  But the TEA Party demonstrations resulted almost no arrests in contrast to the 4,800 that took place in the first two months of OWS and the TEA Party had no rapes, no deaths, no defecations and no $13 million dollar bill for police overtime and cleanup afterward.  The OWS can be said to be the opposite side of the coin to the TEA Party only in the sense that barbarism is the opposite side of the coin to civilization.  She bought 25 copies of the book and if you would like a copy just drop your dollar or whatever you wish to donate in the jar and pick up a copy.  One more thing, EULA asked, how many of you shop at Food Lion and use your card for discounts?  If you get on the internet, www.foodlioncentralnorthcarolina.orgdonate and enter the number on your card.  A portion of whatever you buy goes to the food bank of central and eastern North Carolina.  There are 500,000 people in this area that need help.  All you have to do is go to this web site and sign in with your card number (the number between the 0‘s) .

BOB turned the rest of the meeting over to ERIC (and my recorder  left with the group going to Beaufort to the Court House.  Thus the minutes end here.  Will have to talk to ERIC to find out what happened after we left.)

Minutes submitted by PEGGY GARNER, Secretary.

CCTPP Minutes, February 7, 2012

CRYSTAL COAST TEA PARTY PATRIOTS
MINUTES OF
7 February 2012

Meeting held at Golden Corral Restaurant, Morehead City, NC
Meeting called to order at 6:08pm by Chairman BOB CAVANAUGH
Pledge of Allegiance was led by NANCY BOCK
Invocation by EULA PARKIN

BOB told the group about CATIE MCCABE’s event last Saturday night at Glad Tidings Church.  Reminded us that she had given us a presentation last week about the program she is interested in on sex trafficking/sex slave market.  He went to her presentation Saturday night and he said it blew him away.  The poor girl that got up there telling her story, (first time she had told it before an audience, and needed to do so because she is going to have to testify in court and needs the experience exposing the life she had been forced into), talk about heartbreaking, WOW!  BOB said if she had gone on about 2 more seconds he would probably have gotten up and gone on stage and hugged her.  Talk about being alone up there, WOW!  It was so obvious that her self esteem had been completely destroyed and she was fighting hard to get it back.   BOB said he was going to try to stay involved and would like to be kept informed of any more things like that coming up.  It really touched a cord with him.

BOB reminded everyone that we had our donation bucket here tonight (as opposed to having the 50/50 raffle).  People had already started throwing money in there so we will go that route.  Please help with whatever you can.  The Western Carteret group is having their meeting tonight so KEN and DIANE LANG, and ROMA and EDITH WADE are probably there.  He said he would be joining them after our meeting concludes.

BOB called on NANCY BOCK for our Treasurer’s report.  She said we have $1,164.00 and that KEN said that at their last meeting (Western group) they collected $162.00 but she hasn’t gotten that yet.

BOB asked HARRY THOMPSON if he had an update on the John Locke presentation.  HARRY said everything was a go for the workshop to be held on Saturday, March 17th in the Joslyn Hall at the Community College again this year.  You go on line to register (this is the address I used)
(http://johnlocke.org/events/event.html?id=966) and cost is $5.00 per person to help cover the cost of the room.  HARRY said he had written a letter to the editor Friday or Saturday, right after he had received the email from John Locke’s people about it being all set up to go.  Hopefully, it will be in tomorrow’s paper and will contain the website to use for registering.  It will be from 9:00 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon with a lunch break like we did last year.  He is looking forward to it and thinks it will be another good informative session; if we can just get the word out.  We need at least 50 people to attend to help take care of the expenses.  However, all the more, the better.  It is a good presentation and he thinks everybody will enjoy it.  SCOTT CARPENTER wanted to know what the purpose of the workshop was.  HARRY said this was the second part of the workshop we held last year on the Constitution.  This will be on the original intent of the Federalist Papers, and what would our forefathers think about what is going on today.  TOM AUSTIN wanted to know if we had sent word to Beaufort County about this workshop because they had a lot of people come down here last year from their area.  BOB said he would send them an email with the details.  HARRY said we do need to get the word out, with the registration address.  STEVE BEST said he did not have computer access to register.  PEGGY GARNER said she felt sure that they would have someone available so he could pay at the door.  HOWARD said he thought he had seen a letter to the editor recently from HARRY.  He wasn’t sure whether he had seen it in the News Times or the Jacksonville paper.  HARRY said he had sent the letter to both, plus the Tideland News and New Bern paper also, he thought.  He also thought it would be good if everyone else would write a letter to the editor and plug the event. SUSAN RYNAS wanted to know about putting in on the public library site.   Don’t they have something there?  HARRY said if that were so, it would be good to have something like a notice there.  NANCY said she would put it in the ‘Community Events’ in the News Times.  Discussion on current events and the constitution.  Just what is going on right now should encourage people to come and listen and learn.

BOB introduced the new faces in the crowd:  ROSANNE THOMPSON,  Precinct Chair for Salter Path and Indian Beach.  (BOB jokingly said ERNIE GUTHRIE was going to be her Vice Chair…in charge of all the vice.)  Speaking of all the precinct chair positions, the Republican Party, is having precinct meetings this Saturday.  You need to go to wherever your precinct has their meeting and get involved so you can get on phone committees and help get the campaign going and get out the vote.  LYN BAKER said they were supposed to have sent her the registration lists but she had not gotten them yet.  BOB wanted to know who was supposed to have sent them.  LYN said JUDY WILGUS.  FRED DECKER wanted to know which precinct LYN was in.  She said North River.  She was asked if she was the chairman there and she said no, she was a judge.  She was asked where they voted and she said East Carteret High School.  Discussion on what comprised the North River Precinct with everyone talking at once.  BOB asked FRED if he had anything else he wanted to add about the Precinct meetings this Saturday.  Someone said it and the locations should have been posted in the county paper; and several said it had been. SCOTT CARPENTER said he was Precinct Chairman for the Wildwood/Brandy-wine Precinct area (where 24 and 70 link up, goes up to Hibbs Road and loops around back to start) and their meeting would be held right here at the Golden Corral.  They need some help.  Wanted to know if anyone here at the meeting lives in that loop he had just described.  VERNE THOMPSON said he did and would be glad to help out making calls or whatever was needed.  SCOTT said he would get up with him tomorrow and discuss it with him.  He just wanted to let everybody know it was his pleasure to have been asked to be the chair and with RUTH PARKER, being the Vice and helping him out, they had a good start to the team right here tonight.  Do need more battle buddies to help out if you know of anyone interested.  ROSANNE said if anyone knew of anyone interested in helping with the Salter Path/Indian Beach area to please let her know also.  FRED said BILL HODGE is having problems down there in District 2 of Newport.  He is having to work and just got custody of his 12 year old grandson.  It is just he and the boy and he is not being able to get away to work the precinct.  He had called on FRED to help him out.  FRED had told him he would try to get him some help here tonight, thinking of BELVA and RON MANNING, but they are not here tonight, nor is LUKE KUKULINSKI and his wife.  FRED said young people need to get involved, since they are the ones that are going to be paying all this money back, so they need to come to the meetings and see what they can do to help.  He also invited HOWARD and PEGGY and HOWARD said they were not registered Republican, but Unaffiliated.  FRED said he understood that, but he would like for us to attend if we could.  HOWARD said he didn’t want them to think, if we went, that we were going as spies.  FRED laughed and said he wasn’t worried about that.  He said he didn’t say anything that he didn’t want anyone to hear, so he wasn’t concerned about spies.  The meeting for Newport Precincts is Saturday at 10:00 am at the Town Hall.

BOB also recognized GLADYS and ED SUESSLE.  GLADYS said they were from New York, but they have a home in Beaufort; actually South River, really.  BOB asked if they were just down for the week, or have they moved here.  She said their plans are to eventually move here but right now they are only here until April.  But…if there is anything they can do to help while they are here, just call on them.  GLADYS asked PEGGY, Secretary, to please put her name on our email listing.

BOB called on EULA PARKIN for her ‘J’had Watch’.  She said a long time ago she had told us about the situation with the Muslims and it all started here in North Carolina in July 2009.  This was the wife of the man that was arrested.  (showed picture of Muslim woman whose eyes were all that you could see).  Her husband was 39 years old, had 2 sons and 4 others who were called J/hadies.  They lived in a rural area south of Raleigh. They were all US citizens.  He decided to take his sons and recruit them as war activists.  At the time of the arrests in 2009, the boys were between the ages of 21 to 24.  They had been being indoctrinated since 9-11 when they were only around 9 to 12 years old.  It is hard for her to think that this man was the only J/hadi instructor in our country…just the only one yet to be discovered.  He must have stuck out like a sore thumb for things he did over the years of preparing them.  They had purchased several hundred rounds of ammunition.  You would think that would have gotten someone’s attention.  When discovered they were charged with a J’hadi plot and a NC jury found them guilty of conspiring to provide support to Islamists military in foreign countries.  They were convicted and the terrorist mom, who’s picture she had shown, shouted out ’Prosecutors were racist vultures’.  Finally in January 2012, they received 15 to 45 years in prison for ’misunderstanding Islam’.  She asked did anyone know what happened after being sentence to prison.  They started recruiting someone to behead those who had testified against them.  This woman, the terrorist mom, actually came forward with money, over $4,000.00, went all the way to Wilmington, to meet this guy, which turned out to be a con man, but he took the $4,000.00.  So now this North Carolinian has been accused of trying to behead the witnesses and it turns out that several people were involved and one was a school teacher, so EULA thinks her career is probably ended.  It is pretty amazing to her that this person is in prison and still getting people to go out and get people to kill the witnesses.  He told them to be sure and keep the heads, because he wanted to make sure they had done as told and had the right people.  The NC Muslim is to stand trial as the hit man.  HOWARD said he believed that trial was held in New Bern.  EULA said yes, and she would have gone if she had known about it.  BOB wanted to know if anyone was in jail and she said not yet as far as she knew.  This all started In 2009 and is not over with yet.

HOWARD said he read an interesting article this week about Grover Norquist.  Did you all know his wife is Muslim.  That is kind of shocking.

EULA said the more she reads about Jimmy Carter (laughter).  There is a conspiracy there and Hilary Clinton, Secretary of State is right in the middle of it.  He (Jimmy) comes out in January and says he thinks the US should support Islamic world in Egypt.  EULA is surprised he doesn’t want it right here in America.

PEGGY asked that those in attendance, please only one talk at a time.  When she is playing back the recording for the minutes, and everyone is talking at once, it is impossible to understand what is being said.  It comes in as a big roar.  She would appreciate those who wished to talk to please wait their turn.  Thank you.

HOWARD reminded BOB about the Republican Lincoln Day Dinner Saturday Night at the Senior Center.

BOB called on DENNIS TOMASO for an update on our business cards.  He said the guy making them had been sick but would have them ready for us next week.  BOB said we are getting 1,000 cards for $60.00.  That is the double sided cards.  DENNIS said once he adds his charge of another $40.00, the price will run a little higher.  Much joking followed.

BOB asked SCOTT CARPENTER if he was going to run for Board of Education.  He said he was tied up with being Precinct Chairman right now.  BOB told him he needed to learn to multi-task.

TOM AUSTIN asked if anything had been said among the TEA Party groups about being down in Charlotte during the Democrat Convention.  Are we going to try to get hold of a couple of hundred motel rooms and have some buses or vans so we can go down there and march and protest. He said he would take a week off but he didn’t want to go by himself, because he would look kind of funny.  RUTH PARKER said she thought we should just take a tent, no soap, no shampoos, don’t get a permit, just occupy Charlotte.  Discussed the police finally going in and breaking up the OWS gang there.  HOWARD said he thought he had read that the Charlotte City Council has enacted a lot of new rules to try to prevent the protest groups being there during the Democrat convention.  He suspects it might be real easy to get locked up during that time especially.  BOB said he thought after the Chicago ‘67 convention they really lock down these political conventions now to keep the crowds out.  TOM said he had in mind just walking around out side carrying signs maybe single file or double file around the block, not mob action. Someone said then they would probably consider it a parade and we would need a permit   TOM said then you say, I don’t know this guy next to me, he just showed up.  He asked BOB if it had been brought up among the TEA party groups.  BOB said there had been some talk about it but nothing has gotten any traction.  TOM said ‘then what did he need to do‘.  BOB said maybe start an email campaign.  TOM said he would kick it off and start locating hotels outside of Charlotte because in Charlotte, being the highly Democratic mob owned, hotels are already booked.  BOB wanted to know how much the bus seats were going to be.  TOM said he didn’t know right now.  We may decided to go in vans, rather that buses.  They would work better transporting the people from hotels/motels to the convention center.  We could probably stick 16 people in a van.  BOB asked TOM what he was going to call his event, the TOM AUSTIN Road Show?  TOM said, maybe the ‘Let’s Get Arrested TEA Party Show’.  BOB recognized STEVE BEST, who asked what happened in ‘67, that he wasn’t born yet then.  BOB said there was a lot of rioting at the Democrat convention.  Pandemonium type rioting.  LYN said it was their people doing it too.  Several got arrested and there was a big long drawn out trial, monkey show.  One of those guys married Jane Fonda (Tom Hayden).  TOM said, Daley’s police went in and started beating the crap out of the protestors. Then the hippies decided that non-violence is not the way after all and they started going back after the cops; and the cops brought in reinforcements and while they were having the Democratic convention inside they were having massive fights outside in the streets…tear gas, clubs.  Discussion as to who was running in that election.  Decided it was McGovern.  BOB said, remember he wanted us to be on our knees and apologize to the North Vietnamese.  He wanted to give every taxpayer $3,000 refund, a lot of stupid stuff.

BOB then called on STEVE to report on when he planned to have his movies shown.  STEVE said we were supposed to vote on it tonight.  BOB asked what did he have coming up this weekend.  (The Republican primary meetings are this Saturday.)  STEVE said he had scheduled the move “C me dance’ on the 25th .  He said he had watched it and thought it was one of the most powerful movies he had ever seen.

HOWARD said he had received newsletter from the Civitas Capital Connection and they put on a workshop ‘A Free Market Academy‘ (he had given it to HARRY  to check in it to see what is involved.)  He is thinking maybe we can have it here, maybe even in the fall at the Community College.  HARRY is going to get the details on it and report back to us.  HOWARD said he thought it sounded interesting.

RUTH PARKER wanted to know what was the latest on the March 24th deal to Washington?  BOB said no further news.  He wanted to know if anyone had any friends or knew of anyone connected to the Americans for Prosperity.  If they are involved, maybe we will be able to get $25.00 bus seats and go with them.  RUTH wanted to know if we could call Lockwood and ask him.  BOB said if they are involved then there should be something on their web site.  NANCY said she did not see anything on their website.  RUTH asked if anyone said anything on the webcam last night.  BOB said it didn’t come up.  He said they were working on some kind of position paper on Agenda 21.  They have been talking about that for quite a while and February 20th there is a presentation in Kinston on Agenda 21 that he is going to.  TOM said he had been out of the loop for a while, what was Agenda 21?  BOB jokingly said if we told him, we would have to kill him; so TOM said, then just email him so he could hide.  BOB recommended TOM do a Google on Agenda 21.  BOB said we have an Agenda 21 chairperson, STEVE, who opened his case and drew out a massive stack of papers— a little light reading for TOM.  Discussion among the group on Agenda 21.  BOB said the long and short Agenda 21 stems from the Kyoto  Accords.  It is an environmental movement to save the planet with controlled development.  If you look at the videos out, it is setting aside lands and trying to force humans to live on smaller chunks of real estate.  He said he understood there were 21 wilderness areas scattered around the country, and they plan to interconnect all those with the National Forests and State Forests, and then put in green belts around them enabling the animals to be able to move back and forth.  In order to do this they are going to have to confiscate property and put limitations on the use of real estate and basically just allow smaller and smaller land areas that humans can have freedom of movement on.  He thinks this 100 year sea rise thing that NC is involved with is a part of it also.  The way this is going to come about is going to be little bits and pieces with environmental groups, that eventually over time we will build our own prison.  RUTH said a man on TV last night said each state would have to give up one half of the land in their state in order to connect these areas designated; and that boards will be appointed, not elected by the people, and they will tell you where you can live and where the animals can live.  TOM wanted to know who was pulling for this in the US.  BOB said many various groups, but they are not really aware of all the consequences of this program, like the UN is just supplying the money.  Anyway, February 20th is a meeting in Kinston where you can learn more about it in detail.  What he has been spouting off is from articles he has read on the subject.  HOWARD said there is a lot of these county, city and state planning boards involved in this and if you start seeing things about ‘sustainability’ (there are certain code words you need to watch for) ie ‘central planning‘, etc.  Raleigh’s city planners are very much into it, trying to get everybody living downtown in high rises but someone checked to see where the head man of the board lives.   He lives outside of town on a many acre lot.  BOB said the whole idea of an American citizen buying a half acre of land to live on is considered not wise use of the land.  You don’t need that much land.  TOM said a lot of gardens around here are that big.  BOB said the folks running this program, what they are trying to do—remember back in the 60’s the old projects they built, the great big high rise things.  They want to bring that back for just general habitation.  They call it Stack ‘em and Pack ‘em.  When he saw all those condos going up on Hwy 70 in and around Newport, man, the first thing he thought of was stack ‘em and pack ‘em.  MARIAN MERRILL said she heard they cost $900.00 a month.  Most said they thought that was cheap.  Someone else said they thought they were  a lot more than that.  MARIAN said she didn’t even get enough to pay the $900.  More discussion on Agenda 21 with input from the attendees.  ROSANNE THOMPSON said she thought that if the deer ate the turtles or the turtles ate the deer (on Emerald Isle) we would all be much better off.  Discussion on shooting the deer followed.  BOB said they were shooting the deer because the deer were trampling the turtle nests.  Actually there are too many deer on the island, for the island to support.  Deer are going hungry, eating things they shouldn’t, getting sick, etc.  BOB said the last time Frank Palombo was here, they left this meeting and drove down to Rucker John’s on Emerald Isle to catch the other meeting there and when he came off the big bridge there by Cape Carteret, making that round turn, a deer shot across the road right in front of him and he had to jerk the wheel back and forth to miss him.  Discussion followed on regulations to follow upon hitting a deer on the highway.  BOB said the sad thing about the animals getting hit —the ones that get killed are the lucky ones.  The ones to pity are those that just get mangled and  either crawl off and die a slow death or are unable to pull themselves off the highway and keep getting hit.  He told about seeing a deer that had been hit one morning on his way to work.  He said it appeared that its legs were broken and was on his back with his injured legs in the air thrashing around.  This was before cell phones, and he had no way of notifying authorities to come take care of it and he had to get to work or get fired.  It would have been dangerous for him, alone, to try to get the animal off the road.  He hoped some cops or someone with help, stopped and helped that poor animal, or even some red neck came by and shot him and put him out of his misery.  He said he worried about that deer all day long and still thinks about what happened to it to this day.  This past summer there was a deer laying on the 9 mile road outside of Newport and people were just riding around it and not paying any attention.  He stopped and picked it up (it was a fawn, still had little white spots on him).  He was all busted up (his legs and hips).  He took him to the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter, gave them $50.00 and said if they could fix him, fine, otherwise put him down.  That is why we do need hunting to try to control the population because with all the development going on there is just less habitat for animals to roam.  Around Raleigh, as well as other areas, they are stripping off the land and building hundreds of homes.  They then landscape with non-native shrubbery and the deer eat that too.  HARRY said Agenda 21 will take care of that.

HARRY asked us to remember coming up in the May primary there will be a referendum for the Defense of Marriage Act on the ballot, an amendment to the constitution.  It will be good if you will keep that in mind and spread the word and make sure everyone in your churches and neighborhoods know about it and get out there and vote.  SUSAN said she guessed we had heard that out in California they had voted for that also, but the 9th District Court said it was unconstitutional.  It doesn’t seem fair that one man can undo what thousands of voters had voted for.

FRED said on the primaries coming up the parties do not work the primaries, so if we would work the polls during the primary, it would be a big help.  We (the TEA party people) need to be at all the polls and encourage the voters to do the right thing.  We need people outside the polls, passing out information.

HARRY said the other thing he wanted to mention— Queen Perdue has decide she is not going to try to reign another four years (cheers and clapping), the bad news is Bob Etheridge is now going to try to take her place.  It might not be a bad idea to think about this for the primary also —change your affiliation from Republican to Independent so that then you can vote either way (Republican or Democrat) in the primary.  He and his wife did that in 2009 (changed to Independent) and he got to vote for Hilary against Barrack Obama and he was hoping others would do that too.  This is why he was thinking it would be good the more people we could get of our political leanings to register as Independents and then get in there and vote somebody besides Bob Etheridge for governor.  TOM asked “Etheridge; was he the one that slammed that kid up”.  Several yeses in response.  TOM said all they have to do is show that and there is no way he can win.  He also wanted to know if the TEA Party was going to sit down at the primary (both Democrat and Republican) voting places with a list of their best choices.  Rather than just hitting the Republican, are we going to hit the Democrat primary also.  Are we going to say that these are the best choices?  BOB said he hadn’t even thought about the Democrat primary.  TOM said he was thinking like what we did with the judges, where we had come up with a ‘conservative’ list of judges and we did have some Democrat judges on that list he thought.  BOB said that was the main election, not the primary.  TOM said true, but if we affect the primaries we have a better chance.  HOWARD said TOM wasn’t here a few weeks ago but as he brought out ‘for years in Carteret County, whoever won the Democratic primary was going to get elected in the fall.  Well, things have changed, so now whoever wins the Republican primary in the spring is apparently the one going to get elected in the fall.  His suggestion was that we need to consider putting out a recommended list in the Republican primary if there are several running and work for those we  think would be the best for our ideals.  TOM said he still thought we should be doing it for both parties.  He said he was an Independent and was probably more conservative than most Republicans are, but if a Democrat gets elected, GOD forbid, at least it would be the best choice of the Democrats or at least the lesser of the evils.  HOWARD said he refers to that as negative voting, which he does quite frequently.  BOB said the problem for us is trying to vet so many candidates in the primary process.  Right now we don’t even know who is filing/running until the end of the month.  There could be 20 people running for an office so how are we going to get around to so many to vet.  We can’t.  TOM said the former mayor of Charlotte is going to be running for governor; is anyone else running on the Republican ticket.  BOB said he didn’t think McCory would be challenged by another Republican.  Greg Lewis, county commissioner, who came in late, said there would be a contested governor’s race on the Republican side.  All indications for the last six months there is a gentleman from the western part of the state who, according to his opinion, has no shot in h—, but he is continuing, so far, to state that he is going to enter his name.  Greg did not answer when asked who.

FRED said we need to replace some members on the school board.  He said he had talked to Bob Hardin, who was an investment banker for Merrill Lynch, and they have changed his commission to having to make over $250,000.  It used to be $50,000 to $200,000 and he said he could not continue on that job because he would be working for nothing.  So he got another job and he is in charge of six different financial institutions between Morehead and Kill Devils Hill and he said he would be gone a lot and he could not do the job required of a school board member.  FRED said he did not know anybody else from Newport.  BOB said that’s the biggest problem, finding people who have the time to run and serve.

BOB introduced our latest attendee, Greg Lewis, Republican Party Chairman for Carteret County and one of our County Commissioners.  (Applause)  Mr. Lewis apologized for being late.  They had had an all day meeting (and he was a firm believer that if it takes a 4 hour meeting, then you are not accomplishing anything.)  He said BOB has been asking him to come out and he has been busy getting ready for elections for the last two weeks, and after getting home tonight from the long meeting he was sitting reading the paper when he realized it was Tuesday night.  He said if he thought he was too busy now, what was it going to be a little more down the road, so he decided to show up tonight, even if he was late.  BOB asked if there was anything going on in the county he wanted to share with us, or if there was anything we could help him with, or anything else we need to know about.  Mr. Lewis said not at this time.

DENNIS TOMASO said Hillsdale College has something going on about the constitution also.  He didn’t know if everyone was aware of that—-on the web.  He is not sure exactly when it starts, but it is running something each month.  HOWARD said he thought it was on the 20th.  They are pretty good about sharing stuff and if you miss something you can go on line and get it.  Second thing he wanted to mention was — were we aware that Senator Burr voted against the Insider Trading bill.  Several said they saw the email today.  BOB said he guessed Burr had some investments he wanted to look out for.  DENNIS said Burr said they were wasting their time talking about this since they had insider traders all over the place, so he voted against it.  That sucker doesn’t deserve to be there.  He really doesn’t.  TOM said but he is still safe for the next few years.  DENNIS said true, but he needs to go as soon as we can get rid of him.  RUTH PARKER said Senator Coburn said they already had rules against insider trading.  That is the problem – they don’t enforce what they pass.  BOB said true, they had rules against what Bernie Madeoff was doing, but it didn’t stop him – nobody is enforcing them.  RUTH said nobody is watching the store.

BOB recognized STEVE BEST.  STEVE said he would be showing ‘C Me Dance’ (a Christian movie) on Saturday, February 25 at 4:00pm.  He has converted his garage into a movie theater with seating for 45 and would love to have everyone come and see this impressive movie.  BOB said STEVE had gotten two more movies just for the TEA Party,  ‘Agenda 210 and Iranium’.  KEN LANG has watched them both and said they both are really good and we would be interested in watching them.  It boils down to when we want to watch them.  It probably will have to be on a Saturday, since most folks work.  This Saturday is tied up with Republican Precinct Meetings plus the Republican Dinner, so that day is pretty much tied up.  So that leaves the 18th of this month available.  Decision was made to show those movies on the 18th at 3:00pm.
GLADYS wanted to know if it would be alright if we made it a pot luck dinner ’party’.  STEVE said he thought that would be nice.  ANYONE WISHING TO ATTEND THE MOVIE AT STEVE’S ON THE 18TH  THAT WOULD LIKE TO BRING SOMETHING TO EAT, PLEASE DO SO.  GREAT TIME FOR A GET TOGETHER PARTY and bring your friends!!!!!!  He said he does have a fire place, but he is running out of wood, so if you would like to have a fire, bring your own wood and you can sit by the fire until your log is gone and then you have to give your seat up to the next log bringer.
To get to STEVE’s from Morehead:  go pass the stop light by First Citizens Bank and Food Lion, take the next paved right…. Then an immediate left at the “Y”.  His home is the first trailer on the left.  SEE YOU THERE!!!!

BOB said he had forgotten to get a ticket for the Republican Dinner Saturday night.  Greg Lewis informed him they were completely sold out to seating capacity.  Fire marshal will not let anybody else in the building.

FRED said we all knew Terry Frank is running in Morehead, who do we have running over in Beaufort for Doug Harris and Pat Joyce’s seats.  Mr. Lewis said filing doesn’t start until this Monday and right now he doesn’t know who has announced they are running yet or not.  But we will have a full complement of candidates and we will probably have some primaries in several races.  Hold off a couple of days and that information will be forthcoming.  BOB asked what was the county website.  Mr. Lewis said to Google ‘Carteret County Republican Party.org‘.   FRED said, if you have given your email address to the TEA Party, they email out just about everything they get.  If you haven’t and would like to be included in our listing, then please include your email address on the check in sheet you signed when you arrived tonight.  BOB said you could sign up on the Republican Party web site also.

Meeting adjourned at 7:14pm

MINUTES OF CRYSTAL COAST TEA PARTY PATRIOTS
22 FEBRUARY 2011

Meeting held at Golden Corral, Morehead City, NC
Meeting called to order at 6:09 PM by President BOB CAVANAUGH
Pledge of Allegiance led by KEN LANG
Invocation given by JERE GEURIN
37 in attendance

Introduction and Welcome of New Attendees:
GREG and DEBORAH SCHRECK, CLIFF ALLSBRUK, VERNON HILL, and BOB HAINES

Welcome Back to:
LINDA and BILL SHERRY, PAT and JIM NALITZ, LYN BAKER, JAN and FRED GRUBE, Precinct Chairman of Cape Carteret, and HARRY ARCHER, Mayor Pro Tem Atlantic Beach

Recognize Guest Speaker:
ADELE COLLINS and husband DON

Announced that tickets for the Reagan Dinner, Saturday, February 26, sales deadline was yesterday; however FRED DECKER and DEBBIE RUCKER said they have a few left but need to get them tonight so they can notify the organizers.

BOB reported on the web site connection conversations:  The consensus was disappointment on the budget proposal.  The representatives have not held the line on the $100 billion that they promised.  The Debt Ceiling vote is coming up.  The deception going around is that if we do not raise the debt ceiling, Government will be shut down.  This is not true but just a scare tactic by the Liberals.
Discussed situation in Wisconsin.  All agree that this problem will spread throughout the states.
As to the bogus doctor slips being passed out at the Wisconsin protest, it was agreed that those doctors who signed the slips should lose their license and be fired.  Any teacher who tries to utilize one of the bogus slips to justify being absent from their classrooms, should also be fired.  This would cut down on some of the people that will lose their jobs if the bill to increase those protesters having to pay in to their health care and retirement does not get voted on in time, to help offset the State’s debt. The protesting teachers are saying it is for the children, or it’s not fair to do away with their collective bargaining rights; but most of us feel that to ask them to pay 5.8% of their pay to their pension plans, (most pay less than 1%) which would still be less than the average in the private sector is not unreasonable.  Gov. Walker is also asking them to pay 12.6% of the cost of their health care premiums (up from about 6% but still less than the private sector average.  We, in attendance at tonight’s meeting, feel it’s more about the unions losing their massive income (many union members pay $500 to $600 in union dues annually, and teachers pay up to $1,000).  We feel if union members were given the option of paying or not paying union dues, most would probably use those funds to pay for their own health care premiums, retirement plans or pay necessary bills.  To have my money spent to support a candidate that I did not wish to vote for, I feel would be unfair.
SEIU is sending buses around to gather up protestors.  A bus arrived in Raleigh yesterday and was met by the NAACP in support of the Wisconsin Protest.

County Commissioners’ Meeting last night.
The Crystal Coast TEA Party had 10 members attend last night’s County Commissioners’ meeting.  TOM AUSTIN spoke against the recommended AMTRAC type transportation being supported.  He feels that a Greyhound bus business, which was once utilized in this area, went out of business due to lack of customers, was a good example of why we should not invest our tax dollars in another failed attempt at providing transportation to vacationers.  Who in the world would utilize transportation to Morehead City, get dumped downtown with no way to get to where they were going except by one of our local taxis.  Now if we had a Cruise Line sailing out of Morehead for example, then maybe it might work, but as it stands now, no.
KEN LANG reported that it appeared to him that the Public Comment portion was obviously pre-arranged for several (most connected with the school system) to plead with the commissioners to please not cut their budget.  They actually would need more money due to the federal and state cuts.  Much discussion was held on the Board of Education’s Request for authorization to complete all work in Wings E and F of East Carteret High School.  Commissioner Holt Faircloth said he had concerns about sinking more money into a project expanding the available space at the school when it wasn’t necessary.  He explained that when the county passed the $50 million school bond in 2005, the plan was to demolish wings E and F (due to being in a flood plain area) and build a new building.  About two years ago the school board and commissioners decided instead to save and renovate it for use.   The county has already spent about $1 million replacing the roof and windows (approx. $400,000.), $68,000 to remove old steel frame, improving the heating and air conditioning, etc.  The $290,000 being requested is funds remaining from the school bond, that they wish to use to utilize for some walls to be demolished and others renovated, painting, replacing light fixtures, etc.  While the school board said they had several potential uses for the building, they have yet to decide what the property would be used for.  Commission Faircloth said he did not feel this project was being good stewards of the people’s money and especially since student population is decreasing.  There was a round of applause from the audience (mainly the TEA party members) indicating approval of Commissioner Faircloth’s stand.  There was further discussion on whether the money could be utilized elsewhere (shifted to capital projects, freeing up monies that might be used to help keep the teachers in the class room).  Apparently not, however; it was decided to table the request and have the school board go back and reconsider the proposal and  report back at the March meeting.

Adele Collins gave a brief description of her back ground – originally from New Jersey, was in the Navy where she met her husband of 26 years, now lives in Ocean, was a budget analyst at Cherry Point, and has taught at two schools here in the county.  After seeing teachers use their own money to buy supplies for their classes, she decided to run for the Board of Education.  Lost her first attempt, but with the Republican Party helping her meet ‘the right people’ and how to run a campaign, she was successful on her second attempt.  At the last election she was reelected to her position.  Discussed budget problems such as; will probably lose 92 employees with the school (only 28 will actually be teachers).  Asked how many salaried employees are making over $100 thousand; she replied two principals and Dr. Novey, that she could think of.
ERIC BROYLES read reports he had gotten on employee cuts for the fiscal year and said we all have to cut our expenses, so why should teachers be exempt.   The excuse for not losing teachers was that class room sizes would increase and become unmanageable and quality of education will go down.  Statistics do not indicate this.  It is his opinion that it all goes back to the quality of teachers, having come from an era of the large class room student population; he felt his education would be comparable to education today.  He was concerned that Governor Perdue was just juggling the funds by shifting money from the current state programs to the counties for them to have to come up with the money to fund them.  Example:  gas for the school buses and when replacement is needed for the buses the county will have to come up with the funds.

FRED DECKER said if the cap is raised on charter schools, the new charter schools, needing teachers, will have vacancies that can be filled by teachers who lose their jobs in public schools.

When asked about lottery income, Adele said any funds received from the lottery is used to pay down outstanding bonds, and any funds left over from the budget also goes to reducing the bond debt.
Health care is paid for by the state and matched by the county.  Any extras, desired by the employee, is their responsibility.  We have 100.5 locally funded teachers being paid at the lowest possible rate.  State is higher.   Cost for local personnel with all fringes, retirement, health care is $1.1 million.  Average salary is $58,000 and for new employees, $30,000.

Thanked Mrs. Collins for attending and providing us with some very important and informative information and requested that (after recovering from tonight’s session) to please come back again.

DENNIS TOMASO said he would attend the Commissioner’s Budget meeting this Friday night and get the info to Ken for dissemination to our membership.

Retirement.
SB22  -
HB 92 -    Repeal land transfer tax
HB 65 -    Defeat S510, Agriculture bill

TOM AUSTIN reported on the explanation he received Monday night after the meeting about CDBG Scattered Site Housing Program.  He had requested information during the meeting on what it involved but was put off as taking too long to explain, for him to catch Mr. Barnette and get him to explain later, which Tom had done.  Tom felt that others listening might not know what the Amendment was about and would like to be brought up to date.  He said he found out that CDBG stood for Community Development Block Grant.  It is for low income people with maintenance problems needing help.  This is fine but he was told that after 8 ½ years, the recipient did not have to pay back (make retribution).  He felt that whenever you were able to pay for the help back (so it could be used for someone else in that position) you should be required to do so.

There have been some discussions on how the redistricting might affect the District Meeting but the consensus was there probably would be no problem.
Don’t forget to purchase your tickets ($20.00 ea) for the Reagan Day Dinner to be held February 26, 2011 at the Senior Citizens Center in Morehead City (6:00 to 8:00 pm).  Pat McCrory, former mayor of Charlotte, will be the guest speaker.  Nancy Bock announced that since Debbie Rucker was not in attendance tonight, she would take any monies turned in for tickets.
Bob said that Robin Hayes, State Republican Party Chairman, wanted to have a barbecue on the 27th of February to meet and greet TEA Party members (all the various groups) but was disappointed that something had come up and he himself would be unable to attend, but the barbecue was still on and he would make arrangements to meet us at a later time.

DENNIS TOMASO brought in the new business cards.  Everyone in attendance was encouraged to take 10 or 12 to pass out to potential members.  Want to be sure we have enough to pass out at the April Rally.

KEN LANG told us about a book he had gotten from Nancy “Underdogma”.  He read a portion from the back of the book about refugees talking and one said he was thankful for America, that  “America is the last stand on earth.  Ken recommended we get a copy of the book and read it.  Some very interesting information.

A handout of a memorandum from Greg “Rudi” Rudolph, Shore Protection Manager,  to Duncan Ballantyne, County Manager, dated January 12, 2011 on Proposed Sea-Level Rise State Policy – addition to the N.C. Administrative Code was passed out to those in attendance.  This provides a little more information than we had last week.  Mr. Rudolph told Bob that by the time he attends our meeting as proposed, everything will have already been decided.  He was recommending that our County Commissioners oppose the adoption.  He does not feel that enough valid data is available on which to make a good decision.  Ken said he feels that Rudi is a real scientist and knows his field, and commented that he enjoyed the presentation he and Bob had attended.

ERIC BROYLES, Legislative Committee, would like for us to look into and study the following bills currently in review:
HB – Sunshine bill amending the Constitution
HB 31 – Cell Phone use while driving
Balanced Budget Act of 2011 – Every deficit we run we have to borrow the money to cover it.  According to the handout Eric gave us on “Outlays by Budget 1962 – 2010”, Health and Human Services went from $3,529 million in 1962 to $880,751 million (estimate) in 2010.
Agriculture from $6,437 million in 1962 to $132,661 million (estimate) in 2010.  Social Security Administration from $14,365 million in 1962 to $677,100 million (estimate) in 2010.  Do you think we might could cut some of these?  He said he checked things out and made a few inquiries.  He went on line, pretended to be a family of 4, only making $25,000.00 a year and was not a U.S. citizen.  He was shocked at all the bennies he could collect.  Said he would make out better as the illegal family than a US citizen working to pay for all those benefits being given to non citizens.  He asked if anyone remembered what a can of green beans cost in 2000?  -$.20 – Now a can costs almost $1.00.  And yet they say there is no inflation.  Maybe not utilizing the figures CPI does, which does not include food, gas for our cars, etc.  I don’t know about the rest of you but I do eat and drive my car, so the price of those items do affect me.  They are not giving us a true cost of living calculation.   Fiscal responsibility is our responsibility!  We need to stay informed.

HOWARD GARNER asked that everyone that could, please attend the County Commissioners meeting Monday night at 6:00 PM.  Please wear your TEA party shirts.  We need to make all aware of our attendance and our interest in what is going on.

TOM AUSTIN said he understood that a United Nations Ambassador was touring the country encouraging us to get more involved in the UN. They want us to increase our money donations and participation.  He said he didn’t know how the rest of us felt but he thought we should get totally out of the UN.  Majority agreed.

Discussed Gov. Perdue’s State of the State speech this week (February 14th) and her solid backing of the teachers and education system in North Carolina.  North Carolina ranks 48th in the nation in education but our teacher’s salary ranks 26th in the nation!  What’s wrong with this picture?  In 1948 we were ranked 49th in the nation and today we are all the way up to 48!!!  Amount of salary our teachers make or the amount budgeted for education does not in any way equate to/or the relationship to the test scores our children are making.  Throwing money at something does not make it work better.

KEN LANG reported an update to the speakers scheduled to speak at our April rally.  Said he had finally heard from Rep W.B. Jones, that he would be unable to attend due to a meeting he had with veterans.  Ken said he was going to check and find out where the veterans meeting was going to be held and have some of his veteran friends attend.  He hopes he is wrong but Jones has used this excuse previously and did not show up for the vet’s meeting as planned.  FRED DECKER said he had attended several events where Jones was scheduled to speak but cancelled at the last minute.  Ken said he still had had no response from Sen. Burr or Gov. Perdue.  Lockwood Phillips had said he would be glad to do the event just as he did last year.  (It was recommended that we have Lockwood attend and speak at one of our meetings here at the Golden Corral.)  Fred recommended to Ken that he contact Tom DeLuka (?) and Ken said he would.  Eric will contact Pam Hansom and ask her to speak at the rally.  Bob wanted to know if CATIE MIDGETT would be willing to speak again this year.  Peggy said she would check with her and find out.  Will let Ken know as soon as I find out.

ERIC said he had spoken to some of Jones’ aides and they had informed him that Jones was totally against funding foreign aid.  It was a definite NO for him.

(Please forgive me but I did not get the name of the gentleman that spoke on the $1.00 coin.
He said there was a new $1.00 coin being incorporated in the change you receive from the Post Office.  Please check carefully.  ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’ has been left off the coin.  Recommend that if anyone tries to pass one to you, please refuse.

WAYNE WILLIS said he has several people checking out his board game.  He has made contact with a 17 year old boy to put the game on DVD as soon as everything has been verified.  He also asked that if any of us were members of the Carteret Craven Electric, he would appreciate our vote since he is up for reelection to the board.  He said 40,000 people are eligible to vote but usually only about 1,000 actually do.  Please check your magazine for the ballot, vote for Wayne and send it in.  Must use the ballot in the magazine, not a copy.

Treasurer’s Report -  NANCY BOCK, Treasurer, reported that we have $1,933.00 in the bank but after we pay for the banners and business cards we will have around $1,500.00.  Howard asked if a decision had been made on purchasing the caps that JERE GUERIN had recommended.  If we had the funds, he would like for us to order a couple of dozen.  Bob asked how many in attendance would like to have one of the caps.  Most wanted one, so Bob said he didn’t think 2 dozen would be enough since almost that many would have been sold tonight if we had them.  He recommended that we order 50.  Approved.

Eric said we needed chairmen for the following committees:
Legislature and Fund Raiser/Party planner

Discussed the proposed Barbecue Fund Raiser Down East in June.  Several are checking it out.

Meeting adjourned at 8:10PM

Minutes submitted by PEGGY GARNER, Secretary.

Also approved was $113.00 for business cards to Dennis Tomaso.  (Dennis told Peggy that he would make up some stationary with our logo at the top for use by members in writing our congressmen and governor.)

President Bob announced that Adele Collins will attend and be our guest speaker at our next meeting on February 22, 2011.  Please make plans now to attend our meeting on that date.
We would like a good turnout for Ms Collins.

Superintendent of Carteret County Schools Dr. Dan Novey was in attendance and spoke to us on the budget situation of the schools.  Our schools will be $4M short ($lM Fed and $3M State) this budget year, equating to a reduction of 92 staff members on top of losing 48 two years ago and this past year.  They have attempted to help the dire situation by not replacing retiring members.  The class room student population is now 23 and should be 18.  If this reduction in funds goes through, it could go even higher.  The sales and personal tax has sunsetted and we have lost that.  If we sold the old Beaufort school building, the funds can only be used for buildings, not salaries.  Tom Austin talked about the school and the county he went to.  Said in his day class rooms had at least 35 + students per class.  Howard Garner said he had grandchildren in both Gramercy (a private Christian School) and West Carteret.  It cost around $3,000 to send a child to Gramercy, but around $9,000 to send a child to public school.  And from what he saw the education received at Gramercy was far greater than West Carteret, Croatan or any of the other public schools in the county.  Nancy Bock said her son went to public school for a couple of years and still had not learned to read.  She took him out of the school and home schooled him for 6 months (approximately 3 hours per day) and  then enrolled him into Gramercy, in the grade he was supposed to be in, working at the level of the other students his age.  Howard commented on Nancy’s children and that he understood one of them was now in the naval academy.  His philosophy was “if the student hasn’t learned, the teacher hasn’t taught” and congratulated Nancy on the fine job she did.  Eric Broyles commented that in 1982 the inflation was 20% and we as a nation suffered, but survived.  We cut taxes, budgets, and everywhere we could, but still came out ahead.  He had only one teacher in each class.  There were no teacher’s aides.  Dr. Novey said the aides were mainly used in lower classes with the younger students and for the handicapped.  Howard said according to his calculations, the number of teachers and students do not add up as quoted.  Someone said “Guess we didn’t have lower grades or handicapped years ago.”  Dennis Tomaso said “Wouldn’t the revalv affect the funding also?”  Dr. Novey said he hoped they could work with the county with this situation.  Harry Thompson wanted to know “What about the lottery money?”  Dr. Novey said we got $2.3M.  One million was used to defray the principal interest owed; $250 thousand for scholarships; 10 teachers were paid for; and More at 4 – 19 kids benefitted.   Wayne Willis questioned the state curriculum in history.  Dr. Novey said they are redoing the standardized test including U.S. History.  In a year and ½ it will be incorporated into the standardized tests.  Bob invited Dr. Novey to speak at our April Rally.  He agreed.

After Dr. Novey left, much discussion followed on amount of money schools get and better ways to spend it.  Bob, told that he understood that in 1982, the governor of North Carolina had to deploy state troopers to the South Carolina state line to stop the mass influx of South Carolinians into North Carolina.  It seems that North Carolina had jumped ahead of South Carolina into the 49th place in education and everyone from SC was trying to come here for an education.  Conversation moved on to other subjects.

It had been approved at an earlier meeting that we contact Willie Montague, the black preacher who had established a black /Republican TEA party in Oklahoma, and ask if he would like to attend our April Rally and speak.  Willie responded that he would if we were in agreement with the same arrangements we had had last year.  Alex Davis had paid his plane fare from his own pocket; Bob had given him $100 spending money while here.  Dennis Tomaso volunteered $100 and Fred said he would also help, if others were willing to chip in also.  It was decided we would take care of it.  Ken was asked to check to see what it will cost and let us know.

DOWN EAST RALLY.   Grace Gillikin said she had talked with Eddie Bo Wheatley about the use of his property to hold a rally.  He said we could use his parking area anytime on weekends.  The only problem with this area is there are no rest rooms available.  Wayne Willis recommended the Smyrna Park, which is not that far away from Eddie Bo’s, does have room for parking, rest rooms, water, etc. available.  Will look into what it will take to use these facilities.  We do need to plant seeds in that area to grow another TEA party movement.  The Sea Level Inn was also mentioned.  Several people are checking places out to get the movement there started.

Wayne said Ken and Diane Lang had been playing his board game this past week to check it out.  (Diane had beat Ken)  It is played by answering history questions where you gain or lose points using multiple choice.  Wayne is looking into getting it into DVD form and would like to put it on our web site store.  Ken said he might could get up with other TEA party groups and ask them to include it on their stores also.  Wayne said the price he was looking at was $10.00 and offered us 10% of the proceeds if we were interested.  All agreed this would be a great money maker for all.

SPEAKERS FOR APRIL RALLY.   Jean Preston has a previous commitment.  Pat McElraft will be there.   Dr. Kickler will also attend and speak.   Rep. Jones, Sen. Burr, Sen. Hagan, and Gov. Perdue have also been invited.  Only Sen. Hagan has responded with Unable to attend.  Fred
Decker has not gotten up with Norman Sanderson yet.  Pam Hansom told Eric that she had to check her schedule.  And as noted earlier in these minutes, Dr. Novey will also speak.  Requested we all put on our thinking caps to come up with other speakers.

Ken said he had gotten an email from Tom Harmon (who is on vacation) proposing that we have a pig pickin’ for a fund raiser.  Maybe at the Down East Rally, if we have one.  Tom recommended that maybe we could get a blue grass group to play during the meal.  Bob thought this would be a great idea, maybe in May.  Everyone in attendance thought the first of June would be better.  School would be out and those mean ole’ flies would be gone (they leave the last of May).  Grace will check with the Park Service about the use of the park.  Bob asked if anyone had a pig cooker or knew of anyone who could cook a pig to please get with us.

Howard said he had gotten back with Morgan Garner and definitely scheduled the Flea Mall for April 16 for our rally there.

Ken had talked with Lockwood Phillips about the “coastal rise in the sea level”, insurance, etc.
He said he felt the natural resources proposed guides should be revised.  No one has challenged the date or the supposition that the coast is to be totally underwater by a certain date.   Many feel that this is all based on hoax with no true data.  Lockwood plans to have another program with John Rose on renewable green energy.  The new wind power project in Elizabeth City was discussed.   The company offering to build wind farms in eastern Carolina is from Spain.  They have built too many in Spain, adversely affecting the economy, so are now trying to branch out here.  Anything we hear about global warming, we need to bring up at the meetings for discussion.  We need to establish a committee to look into those obtaining federal grants that we need to oppose.  Dennis suggested that we get Greg Rudolph, Shore Protection Officer, to come and speak with us on global warming.  Wayne said he had lived here all of his life; that the earth is constantly changing.   He does not feel the ocean is rising, only that the earth is sinking (as he understands it about 11 inches every 100 years).

Ken is concerned about insurance rates rising.  Bob says he does not see any real problem.  Howard said he looks at it like the camel getting his nose under the tent.  Once they get started with insurance changes, they will just expand.

Eric Broyles passed out a copy of the letter he had written to go to the House, Senate, and Governor of North Carolina requesting they pass and sign H2 and SB23, known as ‘Protect Health Care Freedom’ into law immediately.  Requested any suggestions or corrections prior to finalizing and mailing.

Eric asked that we check out and keep an eye on the following bills letting our representatives know how we feel and that we are watching:
HB41 – An act to allow an individual income tax credit for part of the expense of avoided public education and to authorize counties to appropriate funds for children educated other than in public schools.
HB34 – NC Legislature standing up for Constitutional Rights.
HB36 -  Illegal Immigrants and private contractors
HB 30 – Authorize the garnishment of wages as an additional means of satisfying judgments in civil actions.
HDRH50029-LH-44C – An act to create the status offense of habitual misdemeanor larceny.   (Bob told about some kids breaking and entering in his area.  They were let go the first time, then, again later,  they plea bargained down and were let go.  They just keep getting in trouble and the law just looks the other way and the situation is getting worse.   If this law is passed it might change this situation.)

Please keep up with anything that interests you and/or might the other members.  Help keep us informed.

Eric said State Senator Jean Preston has requested that we let her know what we want.  Bob asked Eric to please put together a list of bills pending that we are or should be interested in.

Meeting adjourned at 8:04PM

MINUTES OF CRYSTAL COAST TEA PARTY PATRIOTS
FEBRUARY 1, 2011

Meeting held at Golden Corral, Morehead City, NC
Meeting called to order at 6:01 PM by President Bob Cavenaugh
Pledge of Allegiance led by Andrew Goodrich
Invocation given by Harry Thompson
29 were in attendance

Special and new attendees were introduced:
New – Patty Stroud, (guest of Eric and Patty Broyles), Joe Cahn (?) former parole officer from NY State (guest of Roma and Edith Wade) and Carl and Nancy Capps from Portage County, Ohio TEA Party.  This past election their TEA Party canvassed 4500 homes. They have approximately 300 attendees to their meetings.  This past year they had 5 buses to the Glenn Beck Rally and 4 buses to hear Michelle Bachman.
Former attendees – Bill Griffith, Jim and Pat Nalitz; Andrew Bunting, President of the Student Government of the Carteret Community College , spoke to us on the Polar Plunge to raise funds for a scholarship in memory of the former CCC and West Carteret High School student Hannah Loy, who was killed in a single-car accident December 5, 2010.  For more information on the Polar Plunge (please call 222-6253, or e-mail sga@mailccc.net) and for the Hannah Loy Memorial Scholarship, please call 222-6143.  Also in attendance was Andrew Goodrich, a wounded warrior who spoke at our 2009 rally.  Mr. Goodrich was wounded in the war and left temporarily paralyzed.  He partially relies on an absolutely beautiful dog as his companion.  He will be leaving us soon to go to work in Washington.

TREASURER’S REPORT
Nancy Bock, Treasurer, reported that we have $2,021.17 in the bank.  Nancy passed out information on paraphernalia replacement costs she had gotten.  Banners, costing $95.00 each were disapproved as too costly.  May can find cheaper elsewhere.  Bumper stickers/oval  stickers – 250 for $170.00 approved; Flags – 4”x6” with 10” stick (500 ea $115.00) approved; flags – 12”x18” w/wooden stick (100 ea $99.00) approved.  Buntings 3’x6’ cotton ($25.00 ea) and 3’x6 nylon ($33.00 ea).  Discussion on cotton or nylon.  Decided to order one of each and then make determination as to which to buy the remainder needed.  Discussed T-shirts with website on sleeve and cost, ($.35 ea).  Jere Geurin displayed the cap he had had made.  Everyone was pleased with the design but would like to have our website printed on the back.  Without the website, they will cost us $8.00 each regardless of how many we order.  Could possibly sell for $10.00 or $12.00 to help raise funds.  Jere will find out about printing the website and cost and let us know next week.

APRIL RALLY REPORT
Ken Lang reported that the committee appointed by Bob Cavenaugh last week had definitely decided on the theme “Restore the Constitution”.  The rally is to be held Saturday, April 16, 2011, 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Newport Flea Mall.   Setup is scheduled for 9:00 AM.  If you can help, please be there.   Tom was asked to be sure and verify that we could get the trailer for the stage.  Ken said he had emailed Jean Preston and Pat McElraft about attending and speaking at the rally.  Jean is unavailable but Pat said she will be there.  Fred Decker said he would contact Norman Sanderson about speaking.  Bob asked for any other suggestions.  It was announced that our insurance was still good for the April rally.  No new insurance required yet.   Dennis Tomaso said he was still working on the business cards.

FUND RAISERS?
Bob showed us a box of tea that he had received in the mail to be used to help raise funds for the TEA parties.  He gave the sample to Nancy to check out.
Wayne Willis brought his board game that he had designed.  He demonstrated it after our meeting to those interested.  He would like to put it on our web site store if approved by the membership.

OBAMACARE DISCUSSION
There was discussion of the Judge’s decision on ‘Obamacare being unconstitutional’.  All in attendance were pleased with the decision.  However, some have heard that Obama is still determined to continue on regardless of the decision.  If he does, then one of the states will call for an injunction.

FOOD SAFETY BILL
Tom Smith asked if anyone had heard any more on the food safety bill.  He understood that the Senate had come up with the bill (not legal for senate to originate a bill, must come from the House) and so they had gutted it and turned it into a House Bill which was passed.  If so, then the bill can be challenged or defunded.  The Senate bill had said the Agriculture Department could collect funds, which is not allowed by the constitution.  Eric said he had heard Senator Leahy made the statement that courts do not have the right to declare things unconstitutional.
An upcoming bill sponsored by Rep. Glen Bradley, R-Franklin, will basically exempt North Carolina farmers from new federal regulations created by the Food Safety Modernization Act,
S-510, which was co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Richard Burr.  Farmers would be exempted from regulations only if their food were produced and sold within the state.  The bill currently has 21 sponsors.  Bradley hopes to have 40 by the time it is filed.

HB2 –
Help Protect the Freedom to choose Health Care and Health Care Insurance.  This bill would exempt North Carolinians from any law compelling them to purchase health care services or health insurance or enroll in a public health care program.  – Both senate and house have bills – The House bill has 63 sponsors, all Republicans except for one unaffiliated; however it looks like some Democrats may join us.  Bob asked Eric to contact Pat McElraft,  who is a co-sponsor of the bill, to see if we can get a list of leaning Democrats so we can contact.  The bill is currently in committee and then on to finance.   Eric called Gov. Perdue’s office and was told she had not decided how she will lean on this bill.  We need to call and let her know what we want.  Eric will send Ken info and Ken will send it on to other TEA parties.  Don’t know if anyone has been noticing but a lot of bills are being brought back due to the Democrats not allowing them out of committee.

HB15 –
An act authorizing the Town of Beaufort to use proceeds from parking meters for the acquisition, development, and operation of on-street and off-street facilities.  This act applies to the Town of Beaufort only.

REP W.B. JONES
Eric said W.J. Jones voted to stop tax payers funds being used for general elections.  He said he agrees with Jones on his vote there.  Believes Jones has changed his voting record and is leaning more toward conservatism now.  He understood from one of Jones’ aides in his office that Jones was out of sight for a while due to personal commitments.

VOTER ID BILL
Requires person wishing to vote have to show a valid identification card.  Do not agree that it imposes a hardship on anyone to have a VID.  Please everyone contact Pat or Jean and any others they think can have any influence.

OTHER DISCUSSIONS ON VARIOUS BILLS
Anyone wishing to run for an office must provide proof of citizenship before being put on the ballot.  Watch out for and keep an eye on the following:
Dream Act (Back door amnesty)
Omnibus Spending Bill (has 6200 earmarks)
The Republicans pledged to cut $100B from the budget.  Currently say they have found $58B and Jordan will add $42B to make the $100B as promised.  The continuance to fund the budget will come up March 4.  Raising the Debt Ceiling.  Cuts and structural reforms.   Are they just doing a rug dance?

PATRIOT ACT
We need to stay informed, if not, Congress will once again pass a sneak attack on your rights by re-authorizing the so-called ‘Patriot Act’ without hardly a hearing or debate.  In the wake of the 9/11 tragedy, Congress passed the original, freedom-stealing ‘Patriot Act’ in the heat of the post 9/11 fears –without legislators even having a chance to fully read and thoroughly debate a bill that would transform parts of the federal government into a national security state.  Last year, the Democrat-controlled congress quietly slipped through a one-year extension, which was later signed by Pres. Obama.  This year congress intends to renew three controversial provisions of this Act: the ‘roving wiretap’ provision which allows the government to conduct surveillance without specifying person or place being wiretapped; the ‘library records’ provision that allows the government to collect ‘any tangible thing’ during an investigation; and the ‘lone wolf’ provision, which targets ‘non-US persons unaffiliated with terrorists.  The implementation of the national security state has created an expansive, inefficient, and secretive bureaucratic nightmare increasingly being targeted to spy on Americans, even based on anonymous information and political affiliation, all supposedly in the name of ‘keeping us safe’.  Since the passage of the “Patriot Act”, innocent American citizens have become the victims of domestic surveillance.  Together we must stand up to such infringements on our civil liberties and demand the “Patriot Act” be allowed to expire.
Andrew Goodrich, who will be taking a job with the Department of Natural Health in Washington, DC spoke on his opinion of the Patriot Act.  Some of it makes sense and some doesn’t.  There are 16 independent intelligence branch watch dogs, making it a Big Brother thing to him.  There have been 10 terrorists’ attacks in the last two years and he feels the act is being abused now with the watch dog list.  Example:  blaming the shooting in Tucson on the TEA parties because the TEA parties are on that list.   Eric said he understood if you hire someone on the watch list, be it a gardener or a maid, you become in very serious trouble.  There are reports that even some innocent children (with odd names maybe) are on those lists.  Andrew said he felt a person from another country visiting here, that it would be OK for them to get placed on the watch list, but felt that a citizen living here with no record should not be.  Once you are placed on that list it is a nightmare.

HB 8 -EMINENT DOMAIN – ARTICLE TO AMEND THE CONSTITUTION OF NC
Private property shall not be taken by eminent domain except for a public use.  Public use does not include the taking of property in order to convey an interest in the property for economic development.  Just compensation shall be paid and, if demanded, shall be determined by a jury.
Requests that the above amendment be submitted to the qualified voters of the State at a statewide election to be conducted on November 6, 2012, (voting ‘For’ or ‘Against’)

Meeting adjourned.
Several stayed to see Wayne’s board game.
